Press Release

From: Bryan Verillo - GPOA President
Subject: Union Fundraiser
Date: 10/01/2021

The Glastonbury Police Officers’ Association (GPOA) would like to make the community aware of a fundraising campaign that was recently mailed to residents. The mailer was sent with a letter and donation card soliciting for donations to our organization’s charitable causes. GPOA is aware that many scammers use police organizations to steal money. The mailer will contain an addressed envelope to PO Box 637 Glastonbury, CT 06033 and checks can be made out to “Glastonbury Police Officers’ Association.” GPOA will never solicit for donations over the phone.

GPOA is a non-profit organization made up of full-time Glastonbury Police Officers, Dispatchers and an Animal Control Officer. GPOA supports many community events and organizations such as the Connecticut Special Olympics as well as offering college scholarships to local high school seniors. In addition, GPOA supports local families and children in need, particularly around the holidays.

GPOA has been raising money to support our non-profit organization for many years through fund raising events. GPOA routinely provides financial support to numerous officers and families throughout Connecticut who are injured or killed in the line of duty, or are facing financial hardship due to a serious illness that has prevented them from working.

GPOA is asking for your support now because our charitable account is nearly depleted. Any donations will be used solely for charitable purposes and will never be used for collective bargaining. All donations to GPOA are tax deductible.

We are asking for your help to support our organization with monetary donations. Your generosity, no matter the amount, will be greatly appreciated and will help us continue our support of community organizations. Donations should be mailed with the attached donor card in the provided envelope.

Thank you for your support and generosity,

Sincerely,

Officer Bryan Verillo – GPOA President

From Kristen O’Donnell, wife of Farmington Police Officer, James O’Donnell, who was seriously injured in the line of duty last week. Please take a moment to read her letter.

Thank you.

Something has to change. As I write this letter, a hardworking, honest police officer, James O’Donnell, is suffering both physical and emotional pain because he was doing his job protecting law-abiding citizens and confronted a criminal. You may have heard his story on the news. You don’t know James, but I do. He is a husband, father, son, and dedicated police officer for three and a half years. James works the overnight shift for the Farmington Police Department; although, many times you can find him working extra shifts to provide coverage for shortages.
While I don’t know for sure what was running through James’ mind when he realized this criminal was about the run him over with a car, I imagine the most precious moments of his life flashed before him: making music with his parents, marrying the love of his life, seeing both of his babies born into the world, and graduating the Police Academy. I can’t help but wonder, if even for a moment, he hesitated to defend his life knowing the repercussions he and his family could face as a result of House Bill 6004, the Act Concerning Police Accountability. I ask you this: What about the accountability of the criminal who crushed Officer O’Donnell with a stolen vehicle?
The news media has reported that James sustained “serious, but non-life threatening” injuries. This is true and we are grateful he is alive, but it cannot be downplayed that James has sustained “life-altering” injuries. He will spend the next months in a rehabilitation facility, learning to walk again, as his five month old daughter will soon be learning to walk at home without him. For months, his two-year-old son will wonder where Daddy is and why he can only talk to him via Facetime. And in the future, many years from now, James will have to try to explain to his children why the legislatures of the state of Connecticut failed to protect their Daddy, an officer of integrity and honor.
I am no expert on criminal law or the justice system, but I do know there is something wrong when police officers are limited in their duty to protect law-abiding citizens. I ask you to please reconsider House Bill 6004. Police accountability must be determined on a case-by-case basis in order to protect our hardworking and honest police officers, like James. Please advocate for the reconsideration of House Bill 6004 to your colleagues and constituents so that no more officers or families have to endure life-altering injuries.
James’ wife, Kristen, is the leader of James’ support system throughout this ordeal and she has become a strong advocate for the reconsideration of the Police Accountability Act since it now directly affects her family. If you would like more information, please contact Kristen at [email protected].

Thank you.

The Glastonbury Police Department and the community is mourning the sudden passing of Officer Francis Perrone #412. Officer Perrone served proudly with the Glastonbury Police Department since September 2013, and at the time of his passing was assigned to the Patrol Division.

Officer Perrone came to the Glastonbury Police Department with a plethora of Law Enforcement experience, as he proudly served the City of Hartford Police Department for over twenty years. Officer Perrone retired from the Hartford Police Department holding the rank of Sergeant. He was very involved in the tactical team, fi****ms training and community policing.

Officer Perrone had passion for Law Enforcement and was extremely proud to serve the communities of Hartford and Glastonbury. He had a keen sense of humor and was approachable by all who encountered him.

Officer Perrone enjoyed the interaction with the community and treated his brother and sister officers as if they were his family. He made an impression on all officers in which he worked, but had a more impactful comradery and established meaningful, lifelong friendships, with the newly hired officers whom he took a great level of pride in mentoring and training. He was never short on words and was always willing to help a fellow officer in need.

Officer Perrone was married with two children, who idolized him as their father.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
