STAYING STRONG.

This week, telecommunicators across the country observed National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

I visited the Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Communications Center to see what a typical day looks like for local dispatchers, where I met April Lanning.

Lanning is a mother who is also fighting an invisible battle: esophageal cancer. At the same time, her son is battling brain cancer.

Between those personal challenges and the demands of answering emergency calls, her story is one of resilience, service, and quiet strength.

Her example stayed with me, and I’m grateful to be able to share it. I hope it offers you a reminder of the people behind the voices we hear when we call for help.

This is why I love local news.
