A shout out to our amazing Disc Golf volunteers and supporters! The disc golf park is one of Girdwood’s most used recreational assets, with people playing daily, year-round, rain, shine or stone cold!

Thanks to Rich DiJulia, Josh Mooney, Michael Leese, Taylor Cosper, Jake Satathite, Ben Cosper and Conner Rankin for their work on the Disc Golf Course this summer!

Thanks to Alyeska Resort for the donation of employee time and heavy equipment used in the spring and fall cleanup effort! We appreciate Alyeska's commitment to community parks!

The everyday maintenance tasks of trash pick-up, clearing overgrown vegetation, removing fallen sticks/branches maintaining the out-of-bounds lines and the tee pads were tended by most players. We appreciate them taking ownership in keeping the area in good shape for all!

Oh Christmas Tree! Tree cutting is allowed on Chugach National Forest land, provided the tree is 200' from roads and 450' from streams or lakes. One tree per household, no permit required.

Be sure you are on Chugach National Forest Land before you cut. Tree cutting is NOT allowed on other public land, including Alaska State Park, MOA land, HLB land. Cutting on private land requires permission of the land owner.

Today we recognize some partners that keep Girdwood trails in great shape!

Girdwood Trails Committee is an advisory committee to the GBOS and also a non-profit under Girdwood Inc. GTC meets the first TUE of every month at 7PM (TONIGHT!) at the Community Room. Come check out what they're working on for 2026! They're also amazing volunteers, who show up for trails work parties rain or shine! Huge thanks to Paul and Barb Crews, powerhouses on trails (and other projects). They’ve helped build bridges, maintain trails and hosted dinner for our Alaska Trails crew. They even celebrated their anniversary at trails work party last summer!

Friends of Girdwood Trails is the originator of Trails Tuesdays volunteer events and through this program have brought lots of new trail advocates to trails functions. Friends of Girdwood Trails coordinates and advertises their own events and provides extraordinary assistance to Girdwood Parks and Rec for all things trails.

Girdwood Brewing Company is a terrific partner that supports trail volunteer efforts and provides a great location to relax after the work is done!

Alaska Trails has advocated and secured grant funding for Girdwood Trail Projects. Most recently, helping to secure grant funding for the trail improvements on the Middle Iditarod National Historic Trail. They also provide trail crews that work on the Girdwood Trail system to make improvements.

U.S. Forest Service - Chugach National Forest Glacier Ranger District has been a long-time partner with Girdwood trails, managing its own trails in the valley and providing professional assistance to Girdwood Parks and Rec with trail development and improvements. Most recently, the Glacier District has been a partner in the design and engineering of the future Winner Creek Trail Bridge, which will replace the Hand Tram at Glacier Creek. They will continue to partner with the construction of the new bridge.

Girdwood Parks and Recreation is grateful to all of the tremendous volunteers who contribute to making our parks, trails and gardens great, year-round. Over the next weeks, we will highlight members of the community who are instrumental to Girdwood Parks and Recreation.

John Gallup helps us with many projects, and specializes in all things playground/skatepark! John is instrumental in maintenance in the spring and fall, and helps with repairs at the drop of a hat.

20+ volunteers who help with planting about 1000 annuals in the containers and gardens each summer! Thanks to the McD’s for providing a safe place for the plants to harden off each spring.

At the disc golf course, Alyeska Resort provided time and equipment for Ben Cosper and Conner Rankin to do some heavy lifting with heavy equipment on the course. Volunteers Rich DiJulia, Josh Mooney, Michael Leese, Taylor Cosper and Jake Satahite worked on the course throughout the summer and secured and installed tee mats on 9 holes.

We want to especially thank Don Davis. After many years, Don has retired from emptying the local trash containers during winter months. We are incredibly grateful to him for all his help.
