Looking for an excuse to spend a day on the trail?

Our friends at Alaska Trails have several volunteer trail stewardship events happening across the heritage area this summer!

Whether you’re a regular trail user or just looking for a way to give back, these events are a great opportunity to spend time outside while helping care for some of the trails we all love so much.

Upcoming volunteer days:

📍 July 18 – Johnson Pass North

What a day! 🎉 Thank you to everyone who helped make the 6th Annual Spencer Glacier Dash a success.

From our amazing volunteers and spectators to our longtime partners at the and , this race wouldn’t be possible without you.

We’re grateful for six years of support, teamwork, and trail-running fun in what is (in our totally unbiased opinion) one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Laying down in the moss is all Fish, our Anchorage based Program Coordinator, wants to do after wrapping up 4 weeks of our immersive science camp Alaska Outdoor School in Portage Valley! Boots got drenched, the s**t song was sung, and it was overall an amazing month. More info and photos to come!

Pathfinders is coming to Anchorage, Girdwood, and Whittier for the first time this summer!

This program is all about getting kids outside and into the places that shape this region. From Byron Glacier to Eklutna Lake and trails throughout Chugach State Park, each week is built around exploring, trying new things, and spending real time out in the field.

There’s a mix of adventure, art, science, and stewardship woven into everything, and it’s all led by the same crew behind our Alaska Outdoor School and SnowSchool programs! We’re also working with some great partners like , , , and

Less than 10 spots left for the Spencer Glacier Dash on June 7! 🏃‍♀️🏔️

Every registration includes this year’s Spencer Dash shirt, and we have to say… it’s a pretty good one. This is one of our most popular events and spots always go fast, so if you’ve been thinking about signing up, now’s the time!

We’ll also have additional Spencer Dash swag from past years available for purchase on race day while supplies last. Please bring cash or a check, as there is no cell service at Spencer Glacier!

We did a thing… 🚐✨

We officially have a second van, and we’re pretty thrilled about what this means for our programs and communities.

Our first van will continue supporting the southern end of our region (Seward, Moose Pass, and the Peninsula), while our new van will stay up north, serving Anchorage, Girdwood, and Whittier. Having a dedicated vehicle for each end of our large geographic area will help us better support the full range of communities we serve.

Less time moving vans back and forth, more time connecting kids to the landscapes we know and love. 🌲 Stay tuned!

Rivers & Forests 🏞️ (June 9-12, 2026) - 2 spots left as of today!

During Rivers & Forests week we’ll be exploring the Kenai River watershed. We’ll investigate local wetlands, hike through lush landscapes, and adventure by kayak! We’ll celebrate salmon’s important role in our ecosystems (and our lives!) and will create art documenting what inspires us along the way.

▫️Wednesday – Art in Nature at Kenai Lake
▫️Thursday – Kayak + Hiking Adventure to Grant Lake
▫️Friday - Hike to Russian River Weir + Falls (8:15am - 5:15pm)

Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) Mini Camp 🌊🔧(June 16 - 18, 2026) - 3 spots left as of today!

New for 2026 – Think you can build the best ROV for oil spill cleanup? How about ocean research? This 3-day camp (due to Juneteenth holiday) is all about technology and the powerful role it can play in caring for our oceans and coasts. We’ll balance building and testing ROVs with plenty of outdoor adventure. Don’t miss on this new expansion of Coastal Connections Camp!
