🏃‍♂️🔥 We’re running for a great cause this Thursday! 🔥🏃‍♀️

Starting at 9 a.m., members of the Gilroy Police Department will head out to carry the torch as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, supporting the incredible athletes of the Special Olympics Northern California competing in this year’s games.

Our route will begin at the Police Department before heading north on Hanna Street, east on Sixth Street, and then north on Monterey Road until we reach Masten Avenue, where we will hand the torch off to the next group of runners.

It is an honor to once again be part of this annual event and support the athletes, families, and communities that make the Special Olympics so inspiring.

If you see us along the route, give us a wave and help cheer on the runners! 👋🔥

Alley Safety Reminder

Did you know? Vehicles may not stop, stand, or park in an alley unless they are actively loading or unloading people or materials.

Even during loading or unloading:
• Keep the alley clear
• Do not block access
• Allow other vehicles to pass safely

Alleys are important access routes for residents, deliveries, sanitation services, and emergency vehicles. Keeping them clear helps everyone stay safe and keeps traffic moving smoothly.

Gilroy Municipal Code 15.94 – In Alleys:
“No person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle for any purpose other than the loading or unloading of persons or materials in any alley, but any such stopping, loading or parking shall be so done as not to block the alley or prevent the passage of other vehicles.” (Ord. No. 480, § 56)

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community accessible and safe.

Welcome Chief Sanchez

The City of Gilroy is pleased to announce the appointment of Brandon Sanchez as our new Police Chief, effective June 1. Brandon brings more than 26 years of experience in patrol, investigations, administration, and command‑level leadership, as well as a strong record of community‑focused crime reduction. Most recently, Brandon served as Deputy Chief of Field Operations for the City of San Jose Police Department.

The City selected Brandon following an extensive search effort that drew strong candidates from both internal and external pools. The process included multiple panel interviews with community members, business leaders, Gilroy Unified School District leadership, labor representatives, and neighboring city managers and police chiefs.

Mayor Greg Bozzo shared, “Brandon’s track record shows both outstanding results and a deep respect for the communities he serves. I believe his accomplishments reflect a leader who combines effective strategies with strong partnerships and Gilroy is fortunate to welcome someone who not only brings impressive experience but also calls this community home.”

Brandon and his family have lived in Gilroy for three years and are active members of our community. Please join us in welcoming Chief Brandon Sanchez to his new role.

Gilroy Police Department Holding DUI Checkpoint May 22nd,2026

Gilroy, Calif. – On May 22nd, 2026, the Gilroy Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am at an undisclosed location within the city.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt Razo said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Gilroy Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
