Town officials from Hardwick and New Braintree met with Congressman McGovern yesterday to discuss rural concerns and town projects.

The Town of Hardwick is diligently responding in a responsible, scientific, and methodical manner to the recent discovery of PFAS 6/Groundwater contamination. The discovery of PFAS 6 within the last few weeks in the monitoring wells that are above the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) drinking water standards has triggered a series of actions that are required under state law. The PFAS 6 is not new, just newly discovered. It has been likely present for decades on the site. We do not know the source at this time but are investigating the cause linked to an old landfill located in the vicinity of the Hardwick Farmer’s Coop. At this time, the Board of Health has engaged the services of a Licensed Site Professional who will work closely with the DEP to follow proper procedures to protect Human Health and Safety. It is only with professional guidance that we will find the best scientifically based path forward to remedy the problem. Patience and civility will be required to accomplish this goal. The Town of Hardwick working in conjunction between the Board of Health and Town Administration, are actively working to protect the health of our fellow town residents within the confines of the law, working with town and state government and experts in the field-as expeditiously as possible.

NOTE: Water districts are not impacted by the PFAS 6. They were found in wells that were tested.

The Treasurer/Collector’s office will be closed August 11-13, 2026 for annual training.

Anyone making a payment may do so by utilizing the Town’s drop box or pay online at www.hardwick-ma.gov. Any payments received after the 8/3/2026 due date will be charged interest in accordance with Mass. General Law.

To obtain a receipted bill, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and both copies of the bill with your payment.

Hardwick:

Lower Rd (Rt 32) will be closed to traffic on Saturday, July 11th starting at 7:00am through Sunday, July 12th around 3:00pm(ish) for emergency repair of the railroad crossing by Old Furnace General Store, this closure will be during the entire time as the crossing will be dug up.

Traffic will be detoured in Gilbertville at the intersection of Church St and Hardwick Rd. (Rt 32 and Rt.32A) to Hardwick center taking Barre Rd back to the intersection with Lower Rd. Residents/local traffic and those going to Hardwick Farmers Co-Op and Hardwick Crossing Country Club will need to enter those locations through Gilbertville. Anyone going to River Run, High Rd., Upper Church St., Chagnon Rd., Creamery Rd. can still use Lower Rd., they just need to tell the detail officer.

Traffic in Wheelright will be detoured at Lower Rd. / Barre Rd. intersection up Barre Rd. to Hardwick center and back down Hardwick Rd. (Rt 32). Old Furnace General Store / ATM will still be accessible at this end of the closure.

Traffic officers will be present the entire duration to assist motorists.
