Chubbs is enjoying the start of a new book series by author Margaret Peterson Haddix, and those 5th-grade-level books are definitely paying off! 📖💪

We love seeing him challenge himself, enjoy a great series, and rack up those AR points along the way!

🍋 Squeezing Learning Into Every Moment! 🍋

Today, Mrs. Grayson's first graders had a sweet learning experience!

💛 They learned about sequence of events and practiced using sequence words like first, next, then, and last as they made their very own fresh-squeezed lemonade! 🍋🥤

They followed the steps, worked together, and had so much fun learning by doing! 📚✨

First we learned, next we squeezed, then we mixed, and last… we enjoyed our delicious lemonade! 😋🍋

Learning is always sweeter when we can make it hands-on! 💛

🍕 Learning is extra fun when it is hands-on—and delicious!

Our first graders practiced sequencing by using the words first, next, then, and last as they followed the steps to make their own pizzas with Lunchables. After completing each step, students used their sequencing activity page to put the process in the correct order and retell how they made their pizzas.

This tasty activity helped strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening skills, and the ability to follow directions. The best part, of course, was enjoying their finished creations! 🍕❤️

🇺🇸 Labor Day Reminder! 🇺🇸

Southern Choctaw Elementary School will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

📚 School will resume with normal hours of operation on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

We hope all of our SCES students, families, faculty, and staff enjoy a safe and relaxing Labor Day!

🎓 Meet Our Student Intern, Miss Magan Coleman!

Southern Choctaw Elementary has had the opportunity to host a student intern from the The University of West Alabama! If you have noticed a new face around campus, it is Miss Magan Coleman, and we are so excited to have her learning and working alongside our students and staff.

Miss Coleman is a Needham, Alabama native and a proud graduate of Southern Choctaw High School’s Class of 2022, where she graduated as Salutatorian. She is currently attending the University of West Alabama, majoring in Special Education K–6.

When she isn't studying or working with students, Miss Coleman enjoys spending time with her family and watching football— ! 🐘🏈

Miss Coleman chose special education because she has a heart for helping students with diverse learning needs grow, reach their full potential, and build confidence in themselves. She says choosing a career in education has been one of the best decisions she has ever made!

We are especially proud to welcome one of our own back home as she prepares for a career making a difference in the lives of children.

📚🦒 Giraffes Can’t Dance…or Can They? 🎨💃

Our first-grade students had so much fun bringing Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae to life! After enjoying the story and talking about how Gerald learned to believe in himself, students put their creativity to work.

They created their own giraffes—complete with silly dancing legs and colorful painted spots! 🦒🎨

We love seeing our students connect reading, creativity, and self-expression while learning an important lesson: sometimes all you need is a little confidence to find your own rhythm! ❤️📖
