Battle of the Badges!

Our partners at the American Red Cross wanted to share that the countdown is officially on as the Gig Harbor Police Department takes on Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One for the trophy and year-long bragging rights for who can bring in the most votes and blood donations.

This year comes with a new twist: members of the public can cast one vote, while any police or fire personnel who donate will have their donation count double.

34 appointments have already been booked, with only 18 spots remaining, and they are filling up fast.

Help Team Police bring home the win while supporting a lifesaving cause!

GHPD Explores Creative New Approach to Waterfront Monitoring:

Through a unique partnership, the Gig Harbor Police Department has begun piloting the use of seasonal wildlife equipped with specialized monitoring technology to help monitor activity throughout the harbor and waterfront. These seasonal “assistants” provide an unobtrusive presence in areas that can be difficult for patrol vessels to routinely access, helping maintain awareness of boating safety, shoreline activity, and general harbor conditions.

The program is expected to provide 24-hour coverage, with officers able to remotely monitor live video streams from multiple waterfront locations in real time.

While our officers continue regular marine patrol operations, one of our newest “tools” operates quietly, requires no fuel, blends naturally into the environment, and is capable of remaining in the water for extended periods without drawing attention.

Passing the Badge: Honoring Douglas and Swearing in King

At the City Council meeting on Monday, February 23, 2026, the City of Gig Harbor and the Gig Harbor Police Department honored retiring Police Lieutenant Fred Douglas for nearly three decades of service to the community.

During the meeting, Chief Tray Federici presented Douglas with a department-assembled shadow box recognizing his career and leadership, and he was named the second recipient of the Kelly Busey Distinguished Service Medal. In a final tribute before his last radio sign-off, Douglas was also ceremoniously bestowed the honorary title of Deputy Chief. His wife and daughter pinned his badge during the recognition.

Douglas was first hired by the department in June 1997 and served as a patrol officer, detective, sergeant, and lieutenant, helping shape the department and the careers of many officers he worked alongside.

The evening also marked a transition in leadership, as Lieutenant Weston King was officially sworn in to serve the Gig Harbor community.

The Gig Harbor Police Department thanks Deputy Chief Douglas for 28 years of dedicated service and wishes him and his family a well-earned and fulfilling retirement while welcoming Lieutenant King into his new role.

At the city council meeting on Jan. 26, the city welcomed four new police officers. The swearing-in of the new faces officially brings the police department up to its full roster of 26 full-time officers.

This is a significant milestone for the city worthy of some celebration.

With these officers joining our ranks, we are stronger, fully staffed, and better positioned to serve our community. The new officers are (in order pictured) Kelly Palmore, Cali Hinzman, Dustin Hulbrock, and April Goff.
