Building urban resilience could be a huge opportunity - as much as it is about withstanding shocks.
It could help us create a future where our cities are more equitable, sustainable, and vibrant than ever before.
Last year alone, urban climate disasters cost $250 billion, a burden that disproportionately affects those with the least.
A resilient city is a thriving city. We can build this future together by focusing on these key pillars:
1. Social and Economic Resilience
This means safeguarding our people and our prosperity. By investing in our most vulnerable communities and diversifying local economies, we can build a foundation of strength.
Every £1 spent on resilience saves £4 in damages, showing that this isn't just a moral choice—it's a sound investment.
2. Environmental and Infrastructure Resilience
We must protect our planet and our systems. Investing in durable infrastructure and embracing nature-based solutions can transform our urban landscapes.
Imagine cities that can absorb up to 70% more stormwater and reduce peak temperatures by 4°C, creating cleaner, safer environments for all.
The cost of inaction is staggering. Annual urban losses could hit $314 billion by 2030, and heat-related deaths could double by 2050 without significant investment.
But this isn't a story of inevitable loss. Urban resilience is a powerful catalyst for change.
It’s how we future-proof our cities, close the inequality gap, and ensure no one is left behind.
