🐻 BEAR SIGHTING – Hanover Street Area
Gettysburg residents, the Gettysburg Police Department has received reports of a black bear sighted this morning in the Hanover Street area of the Borough.

While black bears are generally shy and tend to avoid humans, we want everyone to stay vigilant and take proper precautions.

Safety Tips & Precautions:
• Do not approach the bear or attempt to take photos/videos up close
• Keep all pets indoors — bears can be attracted to pet food and may perceive small dogs as prey
• Supervise children closely when outside and never leave them unattended
• Secure all trash in bear-resistant containers and bring bird feeders inside at night
• Make noise when walking in wooded or low-visibility areas
• If you encounter the bear, do not run — back away slowly and give it plenty of space to leave
• Never feed bears or leave food/pet food outside that may attract them

If you see the bear, please report the sighting to the Pennsylvania Game Commission or Gettysburg Police Department (non-emergency: 717-334-7548).

For more detailed information on living safely with bears, we strongly recommend visiting http://bearwise.org.

A video of the bear from this morning is attached to this post.

Thank you for helping us keep our community, pets, and wildlife safe! 🐻🐶

🚨 Memorial Day Weekend is Here, Gettysburg! 🇺🇸🌧️

As we kick off the holiday and honor our fallen heroes, let’s keep safety front and center — especially with rain in the forecast.

Wet Weather Driving Tip: Slow down and increase your following distance. Roads can become slippery quickly, and hydroplaning is a real risk.

🚔 National Police Week: Honoring Our Heroes 🚔

This week marks National Police Week, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Observed annually from May 15–21, it is a time for our nation to remember and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Friday, May 8th, PFC McDonald proudly represented the Gettysburg Borough Police Department at the Adams County Police Memorial Service held at the Emergency Operations Center. We were truly honored to participate in this meaningful annual event alongside our law enforcement partners across the county.

To all our officers — past, present, and future — thank you for your courage, dedication, and daily commitment to keeping our community safe.

We especially remember and honor our fallen brothers and sisters. You are gone but never forgotten. 🖤💙

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Fake Borough Planning Commission Invoices Circulating in Gettysburg 🚨

Gettysburg property owners and residents — BE ON HIGH ALERT!

Scammers are sending very convincing fake invoices pretending to be from the Borough of Gettysburg Planning Commission. These emails reference specific property addresses and construction projects (such as chimney removal, additions, porch work, or window replacements) to appear legitimate.
Here is an example of the fraudulent invoice being used in this scam:

[Image of the fake invoice and email attached]

Key Warning Signs:
• The invoice demands a large “Application Approval Fee” totaling $3,500.00
• It instructs payment via wire transfer
• It states that a signed copy of the invoice and wire receipt must be returned by email
• It pressures you to act quickly to “release final approval”
This is 100% FRAUDULENT.

✅ Important Facts:
• The Borough of Gettysburg does not send planning approval invoices or fee demands by email with wire transfer instructions.
• Legitimate fees are paid in person or through official Borough channels at 59 East High Street — never by wire transfer.
• Real Borough staff will never demand immediate payment via email to “finalize” your approval.

What You Should Do:
1. Do NOT pay anything or reply to the email.
2. Do NOT open attachments or send any wire receipts.
3. Delete the email immediately.
4. Report it to the real Borough office.

How to Verify Legitimate Requests: Always contact the Borough of Gettysburg Planning Department directly by calling 717-334-1160 extension 224 or visiting their office at 59 East High Street.

Never use contact information provided in suspicious emails.

We are actively working with the Borough to address this scam. If you receive anything like this, please let us know right away — your report helps protect others in our community.
Stay vigilant and protect your hard-earned money! 👮‍♂️🛡️

🚨 Romance Scam Alert: Protect Your Heart This Valentine’s Day! 💔💻

Gettysburg community, while we’re all feeling the love this Valentine’s Day, scammers are out there trying to break hearts and steal wallets with romance scams.

These fraudsters create fake online profiles on dating sites, social media, or apps, building “relationships” over days, weeks, or months to gain your trust—then they ask for money (for emergencies, travel, investments, or “gifts”).

It’s heartbreaking, but you can spot and stop them!

Common Red Flags:
• They declare love quickly without meeting in person

• They avoid video calls or in-person meetings (always an “excuse”)

• They ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers

• Their story changes, or they have poor grammar/spelling despite claiming to be professionals

• They pressure you to keep the “relationship” secret from family/friends

Remember: Real love doesn’t come with a price tag! Legitimate people won’t ask for money from someone they’ve never met. 💸🚫

Safety Tips for Online Dating:

1. Verify their identity – Do a reverse image search on their photos (Google or TinEye) and ask for a video call early.

2. Take it slow – Don’t rush into sharing personal/financial info.

3. Never send money – If they ask, it’s a scam. Hang up or block them immediately.

4. Talk to trusted ones – Share details with family or friends for a second opinion.

5. Report it – If targeted, contact the dating site. Reporting helps catch them!

This Valentine’s Day, celebrate real connections safely. If something feels off, trust your gut—better safe than sorry! We’re here to help keep our community scam-free.

Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

• Keep an eye out for romance scams—never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or personal info to someone you’ve only met online, no matter how perfect they seem. Real love doesn’t ask for your bank account. 💔🚫

• Lock your doors, keep valuables out of sight, and stay aware of your surroundings when you’re out celebrating. Safety is the best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones.

🚨 Super Bowl Sunday Safety Message from Gettysburg PD 🏈❄️

Gettysburg friends, it’s almost game time! Whether you’re cheering for your team at home, heading to a watch party, or out celebrating, let’s make sure everyone gets home safe after the big game.

Super Bowl Sunday Driving Safety Tips:

• Designate a sober driver BEFORE the first kickoff – Pick one person who won’t drink at all, or plan for a rideshare/taxi ahead of time.

• Never drink and drive – Even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time. If you’ve had alcohol, your keys stay put. No exceptions! 🚫🍻

• Buckle up every time – Seatbelts save lives, especially on busy roads after the game.

• Slow down & stay alert – Winter roads can be slick, visibility might be low, and there could be more traffic. Give yourself extra time and space.

• Avoid distractions – Put the phone away (no texting or checking scores while driving), and keep your focus on the road.
If you’re hosting or attending a party:

• Offer plenty of non-alcoholic options

• Have a plan to get impaired guests home safely

• Remind everyone: Friends don’t let friends drive drunk

If you see someone who shouldn’t be driving, don’t hesitate, make a call.

Enjoy the game, cheer loud, and get home safely, Gettysburg! 🏈

🚨 SCAM ALERT UPDATE: Protecting Our Seniors in Gettysburg 🚨

Gettysburg community, thank you for sharing and helping spread the word about scams targeting our elderly residents. We’ve received great feedback, so we’re adding one of the most important red flags to watch for:

Legitimate agencies and organizations NEVER ask for payment in Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers.

• The real Social Security Administration, IRS, Medicare, police departments, banks, or any government agency will NEVER demand immediate payment via:
• Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency
• Gift cards (Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, etc.)
• Wire transfers (Western Union, MoneyGram)
• Prepaid debit cards
• Apps like Cash App, Venmo, Zelle (for “official” payments)

These payment methods are almost impossible to trace or recover—exactly why scammers love them. If anyone pressures you to pay this way (especially with urgency like “do it now or you’ll lose your benefits”), it is a scam 100% of the time.

Quick Refresher on Common Senior-Targeted Scams:

• Grandparent/relative in trouble needing “bail” or “medical” money via gift cards/crypto

• Fake government officials threatening arrest or benefit loss unless you pay in Bitcoin/gift cards

• Tech support “virus” fixes requiring cryptocurrency payment

• Romance scammers asking for crypto or gift cards to “help” them

• Fake prize winnings or charity appeals demanding unusual payment methods

What to Do:
1. Hang up or close the message immediately—do NOT engage.
2. Never send Bitcoin, gift cards, or crypto to anyone you don’t know in person.
3. Verify by calling the official number (look it up yourself—don’t use the number they give you).
4. Tell a trusted family member or friend right away.
5. Report it!

We’re committed to keeping our older neighbors safe. If you suspect a scam or have been targeted, reach out—no shame, no judgment, just help. Let’s protect each other this winter and always!
