Mother's Day at Gettysburg is remembered in at least two monuments there. 1) The monument of the 86th New York, with the caption "I yield him unto his country and his God;" and 2) The statue of Elizabeth Thorn at the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse, who was six months pregnant when she buried 91 soldiers in the squelching and sufferable heat and odor of that summer.

The doors to our “Keeping Room Theater” are opening, and the programs inside will be unlike anything Gettysburg has seen before. Think fireside conversations, living history, and stories told “by the people who lived them” by candlelight, by the hearth, in the room where history breathes.
Coming to the Keeping Room Theater:
🔥 “The Old Hero Returns, A Fireside Chat with John Burns”
The old man who picked up his rifle and marched into battle. Hear him tell it himself.
🩸 “Blood on the Breadboard, Civil War Surgery by the Hearth”
The tools. The screams. The impossible choices. A gripping look at medicine on the bloodiest battlefield in American history.

Gettysburg's only civilian death during the battle. Her story. Her voice. Her final days.
🕯️ “Home, Hearth, & Heartbreak, An Evening with Mary Ann Filby Wade”
A mother. A town torn apart. A grief that never fully healed.
🌿 “The Angel of Evergreen, By the Hearth with Elizabeth Thorn”

From Civil Warscapes:

On Culp’s Hill at Gettysburg National Military Park, these are a couple of the more recent interpretive waysides that have been placed along cut out and improved trails over the last few years. Despite attempting multiple assaults, General Edward “Allegheny" Johnson's Southerners were beaten back with terrible losses all along this line over July 2-3, 1863.
The top photo shows a Confederate perspective from around the famous "Forbes Rock" (visible to the right). The rock and attacking soldiers were featured in an engraving by landscape painter Edwin Forbes in The Century Magazine.
The bottom photo shows a Union perspective from the rocky heights above where the breastworks that Union General George S. Greene's Brigade of New Yorkers were built and defended. These works were later interchanged with reserve troops from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and a number of other states. Greene's defenses had proved to be invaluable.
The tree and brush clearings across this sector have allowed for clearer views of the slopes that hosted the longest sustained fighting throughout the entire battle.
