Friends of Black Rock / High Rock Respect ~ Connect ~ Protect

Inspiring public land stewardship through conservation and education.

Education and stewardship are the core tenets of our work in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA). Friends of Black Rock-High Rock supports of various groups of people who come together with the common goal of preserving the region and promoting appreciation for its historical, ecological, agricultural, recreational and scenic resources. We are neighbors, visitors and concerned citizens who share a commitment to this wild, remote and priceless National Conservation Area. Dwindling federal resources have put public lands across the country at risk. Friends of Black Rock- High Rock plays an important role, not only through our own efforts but also through providing critical support, volunteers, and expertise to the Bureau of Land Management. As stewards and advocates for the region, working to ensure the NCA receives the highest level of protection possible, this organization enforces Leave No Trace ethics.

Follow us to starry skies at this weekend’s Perseid Meteor Shower campout.

How To Get There:
From Gerlach, travel north via County Road 34 roughly 12 miles until you come to the second 12-Mile Playa Entrance. Using the furthest left entrenched route or "playa highway" which hugs the shoreline, travel another 6 miles before breaking off to the left. A camp should begin to emerge. Look for the Friends of Black Rock EZ-UP and swing by for campsite recommendations and other useful info!

Although there are still wildfires burning in the area, conditions around the Stallion Fire have improved. As of now there are no expected road closures along Highway 447 that would block access to the Perseid Campout. Beautiful weather is in the forecast for the weekend, so we are looking forward to clear skies and plenty of shooting stars! ✨🌌
Please keep in mind that air quality can change quickly with wind movement. If you are sensitive to smoke or changing air quality, we recommend checking current air quality and wind conditions before heading out.

See you under the stars! ⭐

UPDATE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 14
It's a beautiful morning in Black Rock country! Skies are sunny and clear, with good weather in the mid-80s expected through the weekend.

Recent rains have helped squash local fires, and roads are opening to the area.

447 from I-80/Wadsworth is clear.

At this time, NVRoads.com shows Pyramid Highway (445) as still closed, but that could change.

The playa is dry, but wet areas could exist. Drive smart! Camp is located approximately 6 miles out from the 12-mile entrance. We will be tucked into "Meteor Cove", so be sure to look left for us.

Bike ride with Kurstin Graham at 4:00 today, meeting at the 12-mile entrance. Follow the link above for more information.

Self-reliance is key when visiting the Black Rock Desert. As always, check weather and road conditions prior to coming out. Bring everything you need for a successful weekend under the stars.

Questions? Ask here, DM us, email us: [email protected], or swing by 320 Main Street in Gerlach. We should be open most of today if we're not out setting up on playa.

Thanks for your understanding as we continue to remain short-staffed due to federal budget cuts. (All the more reason to become a member.) We are grateful for each and every one of you who share our love for this special place.

One of the best parts about this year’s Perseid Meteor Shower Campout? The moon will be only a thin crescent - meaning minimal moonlight and maximum meteor viewing. ✨

That means darker skies, brighter meteors, and an even better chance to experience one of the year’s most spectacular celestial events from the Black Rock Desert.

Join us August 14–16 for a weekend of camping on the playa, a guided bike ride, live music, great food, stewardship, and an unforgettable night beneath the Perseids.
