We had a great time on Friday at "Mario Kart Through the Ages!" The teens successfully competed at Mario Kart on each of the 7 Nintendo Consoles. Points were tallied on each and then all the scores were added together. The top two finishers were awarded a small prize bag, which included a miniature Mario Kart figurine and some candy. I think everyone had a blast!

Thank you to all of our sponsors for this event: Bumper To Bumper Body and Paint, Bluffs Dental, Gering Martial Arts Center, Sweet Tattoo, Rhonda Schledewitz - The Horace Mann Companies, Tax Express, Next Generation Tax & Accounting, LLC, and Arthur’s Pizza.

This week's Teen Book of the Week is "Forbidden Mountain" by Brandon Mull. This is the first book in the Guardians series, and you will soon be able to find it on the New Junior Books display.

The story centers around two different characters. Mako is Anoran. When Anoran children reach a certain age, they are given the opportunity to bond with a guardian, a spiritual being with power that they will share with you through your bond. There are some rules regarding the selection of the guardian you will bond with, but the biggest one is that you should never bond with one of the Accursed guardians. They are dangerous, and bonding with them, when found out, gets you put to death. When Mako decides to bond with one of the Accursed anyway, he faces a greater challenge than he has ever faced before.

Arden lives in a small, but well-to-do town. But she makes friends with some city kids who she sneaks off to visit. When her closest friend decides to join a local gang and subsequently disappears, Arden decides to infiltrate the gang to try to find her. When the gang realizes that Arden has a special ability, they suck her into the organization, but she gets in too deep.

Eventually, Arden escapes and ends up in an Anoran settlement, the same one where Mako has become an apprentice. They find themselves pushed together to help take down a large, criminal organization.

This book is well-written and enjoyable to read, especially for those who like fantasy tales. It is clearly the first book of a series though, as it ends without a clear resolution...so prepare yourself for that.
