This week is National Correctional Officers Week. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan, proclaimed the week of May 6th 1984 to be National Correctional Officers Week. Since then, the first full week in May has been designated to recognize and honor the work of Correctional Officers and Correctional Personnel nationwide. In his Proclamation, the late president recognized the inherent struggles correctional officers face daily and an evolving profession. He stated, Historically, correctional officers have been viewed as "guards," occupying isolated and misunderstood positions in prisons and jails. In recent years, the duties of these officers have become increasingly complex and demanding. They are called upon to fill, simultaneously, custodial, supervisory and counseling roles. The professionalism, dedication and courage exhibited by these officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserve our utmost respect. The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.
The deputies at the Scott County Detention Center work hard every day to keep our community and inmates safe, by maintaining a safe and secure jail. It’s a critical, unheralded function that they perform each day for Scott County. I thank them for their service and for our community partners, who’ve chosen to demonstrate their appreciation for them this week.
