Baruch Foundation is a non-profit organization and owner of the over 16,000-acre wildlife refuge, Hobcaw Barony. Made as a royal land grant in 1718, it was eventually subdivided into 11 individual plantations. It became the home of Wall Street millionaire and presidential adviser, Bernard Baruch. Baruch's daughter, Belle, purchased all of the barony over a period of several years, and at her death a foundation was created to use the land for education and research.

☀️Same beach; different years! All four photos feature loggerhead sea turtle tracks on Hobcaw Beach. The black-and-white photos were taken by Lewis Riley in 1975. The color photos, taken on Sunday by Brandie with , show this year's first false crawl (i.e., no eggs laid)! Maybe the first nest will be laid before the end of the week?!

It’s that time of year: alligator breeding season! While visiting Kimbel Pond, a few of our educators were amazed to hear an alligator bellow! Although this production of sound is usually attributed to males, female alligators may also bellow during mating season. If you look to the left side of the video in the comments, you’ll see some small alligators close-by to the adult alligator, which leads us to believe the adult is a female looking after some of last year’s young. What do you think?

Because of YOU, the legacy of Hobcaw Barony continues to inspire and impact future generations.

During Palmetto Giving Day, our incredible community came together to support the preservation of the historic Strawberry Schoolhouse and the creation of a new Outdoor Classroom — helping us connect the past, present, and future through education, conservation, and stewardship.

Belle Baruch believed deeply in protecting the natural world and creating opportunities for learning. Thanks to your generosity, her vision lives on every day at Hobcaw Barony through the students who explore our forests and marshes, the preservation of historic places that tell important stories, and the research and education that shape a better future.

Together, you helped raise $21,265 to ensure that Hobcaw remains a place where history, conservation, and education thrive for generations to come.

From all of us at Hobcaw Barony — thank you for believing in this mission and for being part of Belle’s enduring legacy. 💚
