Today, we pause to remember one of the most significant, and heartbreaking, days in the history of Sussex County EMS.

Eighteen years ago, on the morning of June 17, 2008, Paramedic Stephanie Callaway, affectionately known as the “Giggle Medic,” made the ultimate sacrifice while caring for others.

Stephanie and her patient, Ms. Betty Jane Hall, both lost their lives following a tragic ambulance crash while enroute to Beebe Hospital.

During her time with Sussex County EMS, Stephanie served as a Paramedic, Field Training Officer, Public Information Officer, and President of the Paramedic Association. Those who knew her remember her infectious laugh, bright spirit, and unwavering dedication to patient care.

As the years pass, more members of our team never had the opportunity to know Stephanie personally. That makes it even more important that we continue to share her story and carry forward her legacy of compassion, professionalism, and service.

In 2023, on the fifteenth anniversary of her passing, Sussex County EMS dedicated a memorial outside the Public Safety Complex in her honor. It stands as a lasting reminder of the “Giggle Medic” and the impact she made on so many.

Today, we ask you to pause and remember Stephanie. Share a story. Smile. Laugh. Giggle. And above all, continue caring for others in the spirit that she embodied every day.

She is remembered. She is honored. She is never forgotten.
