Thanks to William Penn, courts were established on September 22, 1676, in all three of our counties. Our Old Sussex Courthouse was dedicated 300 years later. It was built in 1791 as the county government seat and moved in 1837 to make way for a new courthouse. After use as a home and print shop, it was conveyed to the state in 1962. Its renovation took years, then the old courthouse was dedicated during the American Bicentennial.
