2026 LEGAL NOTICE
AERIAL APPLICATION TO CONTROL MOSQUITO LARVAE
ON COASTAL SALT MARSHES AND UPLAND HABITAT
The Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District will conduct helicopter applications of the biological larvicide, VectoBac12AS (EPA reg. 73049-38) to control mosquito larvae over salt marshes in Salisbury, Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich, and any other new subscribing community if requested. Applications will be conducted as necessary during daylight hours from April 1, 2026, through October 31, 2026.
The material to be applied is a natural bacterium found in soil and water. VectoBac12AS is a very selective larvicide with little or no effect on humans, pets, wildlife, pollinators, and most other beneficial insects. VectoBac12AS targets mosquito larvae and a few other closely related aquatic insects in the fly family. The VectoBac12AS will be applied by helicopter flying low and directly over the salt marsh and or upland habitat.
Residents need not take any special precautions due to the safety of VectoBac12AS and because the application will occur directly over wetlands. NEMMC started this project in 2016 in a member community. Working to reduce mosquito breeding by clearing ditches, removing debris, and improving water flow in the marsh, with major cleanups and site re-evaluations completed in coordination the community.
After years of permitting, the project began again last week to restore ditch function, improve drainage, and reduce habitat for nuisance and vector mosquito species.
Clearly stated, moving water does not breed mosquitoes.

Green head traps…yes we’re still working on them. Good news is all the tedious repairs are done and building brand new traps is underway.

Last week, our staff were off to Hyannis for the Northeastern Mosquito Control Association’s 71st Annual Meeting (NMCA). NMCA meetings earn staff continuing education credits that are required for licensing.
We took part in great discussions on effective communication and how to nip misinformation in the bud, always a timely topic. Another standout session focused on mosquito monitoring during wetland restoration, which is especially relevant since our crew is back at a wetland restoration site this week in one of our member communities.
Always learning, always working to serve our communities better!

Wetlands work never stops. One of the coolest projects we’re working on is helping restore the Great Marsh. By opening things up for natural tidal flow, we’re cutting down stagnant pockets of water where mosquitoes love to breed.
When the water can drain like it’s supposed to, we get fewer breeding hotspots, and that means fewer spots that need aerial larvicide treatments. Big win for the marsh, big win for us.

It’s November and we’re still out here working on source reduction (rimless old tires breed mosquitoes) so let us take them for you.  We are here at the Rowley hazardous waste day until 1230pm for Rowley residents.

Yesterday NEMMC staff spent the day at Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project for our fall field day. Topics included information on sprayers by Clarke, equipment maintenance, and electric vehicles for mosquito control. Staff earned educational credits which are required for licensing each year.
