As you gather with family and friends to celebrate, please remain weather aware. If your plans include the beach, use caution in and near the water. A moderate risk of rip currents and strong longshore currents are expected along Georgetown County beaches today.

Georgetown County Emergency Management just got a boost to its disaster response toolkit! 🌀
We've received a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation's HERO Grant Program to help fund equipment for rapid Points of Distribution (POD) operations — gear that helps us get water, food and other essential supplies to residents faster during hurricanes, flooding and extended power outages.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Coastal Georgetown County from 8 PM to 11 PM tonight, June 16th. Minor coastal flooding may occur along the immediate coastline and tidal waterways during this time. Be safe, and don’t drive through floodwaters!

We’ve had several Special Weather Statements and weather alerts issued throughout the day, and hopefully this will be the last one for today! While much of Georgetown County has already experienced periods of heavy rain, additional hazards remain this evening. The NWS Wilmington has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Coastal Georgetown County from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM today, June 14th. Minor coastal flooding is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Up to 0.5 feet of inundation above ground level is expected in some locations.

In addition, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 8:00 PM today due to strong south-to-north longshore currents. These currents can quickly carry swimmers into dangerous areas, including rip currents, piers, and jetties.

As always, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Georgetown County and south-central Horry County in South Carolina until 3:30 PM EDT.

At 3:00 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Murrells Inlet and was moving northeast at 20 mph. Radar indicates the storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail.

Minor hail damage to vehicles is possible, and residents should also be prepared for potential wind damage to trees and power lines.

Communities in the warning area include Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Socastee, Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Plantersville, Burgess, Yauhannah, Bucksville, Litchfield Beach, Bucksport, and Waccamaw Community Hospital.

For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building and remain there until the storm has passed.

NWS Wilmington, NC has issued another Special Weather Statement for our area. A strong thunderstorm is moving through northeastern Georgetown and southeastern Horry counties and is expected to continue through 3:00 PM.

The storm, located near Garden City at 2:34 PM, is moving northeast at 50 mph and may produce wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-size hail.
Gusty winds could bring down small tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects. Minor damage to vegetation is possible.

At 102 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated a cluster of strong
thunderstorms between Hemingway and Outland, moving northeast at 15
mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Bucksville, Dongola, Outland, and P*e Dee Crossroads.

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

🚨 Another hot and humid day is ahead for our area. Our NWS Wilmington partners have issued a Heat Advisory from 11 AM to 8 PM today (June 14). Heat index values are expected to climb above 105°. Limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. A few strong pop-up storms are possible again this afternoon, so keep an eye on the sky and stay weather aware. When thunder roars, go indoors!

A Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect from 6AM through this evening. Strong south-to-north longshore currents can quickly pull swimmers into dangerous areas, including rip currents, piers, and jetties. Longshore currents may sweep swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.
