π§ Is That Fire Hydrant Leaking? Maybe Not!
Weβve recently received several 911 calls reporting βleakingβ fire hydrants throughout our community. In some cases, what youβre seeing is actually an automatic flushing device doing exactly what itβs designed to do!
These devices periodically release water from the water system to help:
π§ Maintain water quality
π§ Keep proper chlorine/disinfectant levels
π§ Flush stagnant water from low-flow or dead-end areas
π§ Reduce sediment buildup in water mains
So, if you see water steadily flowing from a hydrant or a device attached to one, there may not be an emergency at all.
Of course, if you see a hydrant that has been struck by a vehicle, is spraying water uncontrollably, flooding the roadway, or creating an immediate hazard, please report it.
A little water coming from a hydrant can look concerning β but sometimes itβs just your local water system keeping things clean and flowing! ππ§
