🔥 We need to talk about fire season.

Over the last several days, we have already seen multiple small, but very real fires. Thankfully, many were caught quickly - thanks to quick response by our fire partners. But every single one had the potential to become something much worse.

The truth is… many wildfire starts are preventable.

In a county like ours, protecting our communities, forests, ranches, homes, and open spaces starts with all of us making smart choices every single day.

Please remember:
🚫 Don’t burn...let alone on hot, dry, or windy days
🔗 Check trailer chains and tires before driving
🚗 Never park in dry grass
🛠 Use equipment responsibly and avoid mowing during peak heat/wind
🚬 Fully extinguish ci******es
🔥 Follow all local fire restrictions

It only takes one spark.

Firefighters, dispatchers, law enforcement, road crews, and emergency personnel are already responding across the region. Let’s do everything we can to avoid adding another fire to the list.

Wildfire prevention is not just a firefighter responsibility, it’s a community responsibility.

Summer like conditions are expected for the majority of the week and through the holiday weekend. Morning clouds along the coast are likely, but should give way to sunshine by the afternoon. Inland temperatures are expected to be 10-15 degrees above normal through Sunday. Weak instability in the region brings about a 10% chance of thunderstorms across northern California for Friday and Saturday afternoons. Conditions could begin to change on Memorial Day. We’re watching for the potential for a cold low pressure system to move into the Pacific Northwest Monday into early next week, which could bring a 10-15 degree cooling trend on Monday along with increasing rain chances later in the day. Stay tuned as details become more clear over the coming days.

It’s only the beginning of summer, and it’s already been a busy start to fire season across Siskiyou County.

With hot temperatures, dry fuels, and windy conditions, it does not take much for a small mistake to turn into a fast-moving wildfire.

Please help do your part to prevent the next fire:

🚫 Avoid outdoor burning on hot or windy days (it can wait)
🔗 Check trailer chains so they are not dragging
🚗 Never park or drive on dry grass
🛠 Use equipment carefully, especially during the heat of the day
🚬 Fully extinguish ci******es and never toss them from a vehicle
🌲 Keep defensible space around your home clear and maintained

One spark is all it takes.

Our firefighters and fire partners are already working hard this season. Let’s not make their job harder by causing preventable fires.

Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay fire smart, Siskiyou. 🔥

A pair of southerly systems will bring moderate to heavy precipitation to parts of Siskiyou and Curry counties from Tuesday into Friday morning, with snowfall expected for higher elevations. This activity can make travel locally hazardous, especially on remote passes or at higher elevations. With the second system, lower snow levels on Friday morning may bring snow showers to parts of Interstate 5 between Dunsmuir and W**d as well as parts of Highway 89. Please stay tuned to forecast updates for this busy travel period.
