The Alfred D. Hughes Unit proudly recognizes and thanks Senior Warden John Lopez for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to our staff, inmates, and agency mission.

With 22 years of dedicated service to TDCJ, Mr. Lopez has built a career grounded in integrity, accountability, and leading by example.

During his tenure at the Hughes Unit, Mr. Lopez worked tirelessly to strengthen facility safety and security while empowering the next generation of correctional leaders. Through mentorship, hands-on training, and proactive contraband prevention measures, he equipped staff with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone.

His collaborative leadership with agency divisions and the Hughes Unit team also strengthened rehabilitative programs, expanding opportunities for the men in our custody to develop skills, embrace positive change, and prepare for successful reintegration into society.

Mr. Lopez’s leadership has made a lasting impact on the Hughes Unit, its staff, and the individuals we serve. His commitment to developing leaders, strengthening operations, and promoting rehabilitation reflects what it means to Lead with HEART! 💙

The Alfred D. Hughes Unit proudly recognizes Captain Jamal Lark for his outstanding dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Since beginning his career as a Correctional Officer in June 2013 at the Hughes Unit, Captain Lark has demonstrated hard work and perseverance, advancing through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain.

Currently serving as Captain in Restrictive Housing, he continues to lead by example, promoting teamwork, accountability, and staff development.

Captain Lark, your dedication, leadership, and positive impact are truly appreciated. Your journey reflects the value of hard work, determination, and commitment to others.

The Hughes Unit would like to recognize these two dedicated employees.

Employee of the Month-Amy Manear Family Liaison Coordinator

Selected for her ability to accept new challenges and making a significant impact as the FLC, being impactful serving both the public and unit administration.

Her prior knowledge as a Captain and Case Manager in Classification have proven to excel her ability to address liaison concerns and assist in high level investigations in an efficient and timely manner.

We are excited to see Mrs. Manear develop and take on new tasks in her role. She is already doing a great job and know the sky’s the limit with her, congratulations!

Officer of the Month-Brandie Riendeau (Self Harm Prevention Officer)

Selected for her initiative and thoughtful approach towards safety and prevention in dealing with Mental Health needs of the men living at the unit.

She has brought several new initiatives and activities that continue to make a significant impact with the men at the facility. She not only focus on the men who live here but always ensures to serve the men and women who work here.

Her dedication is unwavering and we are proud of the growth of the Self Harm Prevention Officer during her tenure there, congratulations and well deserved!

✨ Hughes Campus Education Library Update ✨

The Hughes Campus Education Library continues its transformation into a modern, welcoming learning space! As the showcase campus for the Windham School District Bluebonnet Region, we recently received beautiful new soft-seating furniture that creates the feel of a contemporary public library.

Residents and students were excited to enjoy the new space during their sessions this week, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

We are grateful to Library Services for helping make this vision a reality and for investing in an environment that inspires learning and reading. 📚🪑💙
