Participants also excelled across other livestock categories. In hog showmanship, Emma Taylor claimed first place in the senior division, with Mary Grace Baker placing second. This week, we had the chance to participate in one of our favorite events of the year—Farm Day Adventures! This long-standing program gives local 2nd graders a hands-on opportunity to learn where their food and fiber come from right here in Gates County.

Students visited three working fields and learned all about wheat, corn, and Irish potatoes, making real connections between agriculture and their everyday lives.

✨ Some fun highlights from the day include:

🎮Ashton Lewis showed students that agriculture uses modern technology too, with a drone demonstration in the field! Drones are used to help farmers make applications to crops when it's too wet for tractors to go into the fields.

🌽Students learned that each kernel of corn must be pollinated by an individual strand of silk in order to form.

🌾Wheat was a big hit—students discovered how it’s used to make many of our favorite foods and even got to taste-test flatbread made from freshly ground grains! 🍞

A huge thank you to our local farmers for allowing us to use their fields and to Black Gold Farms for providing a special guest to talk all things potatoes. We couldn’t do this without the support of our amazing agricultural community and our school teachers!
