Local seat belts are reporting a severe lack of appreciation.

"We've saved thousands of lives," one seat belt stated. "Yet people still ignore us until they see flashing blue lights."

The truth is, your seat belt is the most reliable passenger you'll ever have. It won't ask to stop for snacks, it won't change the radio station, and it won't tell you how to drive.

But it WILL help save your life in a crash.

Before you shift into drive, make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up: front seat, back seat, and even that friend who says, "We're just going down the road."

Crashes don't care how short the trip is.

🚔☀️ STOP. LOOK. LOCK. Every Time. ☀️🚔

🌡️As temperatures rise, the Scott County Sheriff's Office is reminding parents, caregivers, and members of the community that hot cars can be deadly.

📊 The facts are alarming:
• 31 children died in 2025 due to vehicular heatstroke.
• On average, 37 children die each year in hot vehicles.
• 2018 and 2019 were record years, with 53 child heatstroke deaths each year.

👶 Children are especially vulnerable because their body temperature rises 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's. Children under 1 year old are at the greatest risk and account for approximately one-third of all hot car deaths.

🌡️ In just 10 minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise by 20 degrees or more. Cracking a window provides little protection. Tragic heatstroke deaths have occurred in shaded parking areas and when outside temperatures were 80°F or lower.

Remember: STOP. LOOK. LOCK.

🛑 STOP before leaving your vehicle.
👀 LOOK in the back seat for children.
🔒 LOCK your vehicle to prevent children from entering unattended.

If You See a Child Alone in a Vehicle:

🚨 Act immediately.
• Call 911 right away.
• If the child appears unresponsive, distressed, overheated, or in immediate danger, get help as quickly as possible and follow the instructions of emergency dispatchers.
• Stay with the child and vehicle until first responders arrive.

When it comes to children and hot cars, minutes matter and every second counts.

Together, we can prevent these tragedies and keep our children safe.

☀️🚔 SUMMER DRIVING SEASON IS HERE 🚔☀️

Vacation plans? Weekend getaways? Trips to the lake? Summer means more vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and bicyclists sharing our roadways.

Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to give your vehicle a safety check:

✅ Tires – Check pressure, tread depth, and don't forget the spare.
✅ Brakes – Make sure they're working properly.
✅ Lights – Test headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
✅ Fluids – Check oil, coolant, washer fluid, and other essential fluids.
✅ Battery & Wipers – Summer heat can be tough on both.

🧰 Pack an emergency kit with water, a flashlight, jumper cables, a first aid kit, and a phone charger.

🗺️ Plan your route, check weather and traffic conditions, and allow extra travel time.

Most importantly:

🚗 Leave More Space Than You Think You Need

Following too closely is a major contributor to rear-end crashes.

A good rule of thumb is the 3-second rule:
✔️ Choose a fixed object ahead.
✔️ When the vehicle in front passes it, count three seconds.
✔️ If you reach the object before three seconds, you're following too closely.

Increase your following distance during rain, fog, nighttime driving, or when towing.

Giving yourself extra space gives you extra time to react.

THE SCOTT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE STATISTICS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2026:

-Scott County Central Dispatch received a total of 14,442 calls for the 3-month period. Of those calls received 2,942 were dispatched to the Sheriff’s Office.

-Total number of domestic calls and protective orders- 43

-Criminal papers served- 377. 259 felonies, and 118 misdemeanors. Included in that are 46 drug related cases and 7 DUI related.

-Sheriff’s Deputies issued 373 traffic summons and were dispatched to 79 motor vehicle accidents.

-Deputies served 1,004 civil process papers.

-There were 493 IBR’s (incident based reports) completed with 97 active, 8 marked inactive and 112 closed with an arrest.

-The Sheriff’s Office Court Security Deputies provided 392 hours of courtroom security and 472 hours of front door/ entrance security.

-The Sheriff’s Office conducted 27 traffic checkpoints.

-Sheriff Deputies did 47 out of state extraditions.

-Deputies provided 5 in state transports.

-The Sheriff’s Office processed 227 concealed carry permits.

-The Sheriff’s Office processed 167 fingerprints.

-Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 42 calls to unlock vehicles.
