Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List Open

The Gastonia Housing Authority is continuing to accept applications for the Housing Choice Voucher and Rental Assistance Demonstration (formerly known as Public Housing) Programs.

Gastonia Housing Authority will be closed until Monday, August 2, 2021.

Due to last night's storms, we have lost all telephone and internet services. Our vendors are unable to get replacement equipment and restore service until Monday. Our staff will respond to all calls and emails as quickly as possible, but please expect some delay.

The deadline to submit applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program has been extended until 4PM Thursday, July 29, 2021.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list opening.
The Gastonia Housing Authority will accept applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program from 9AM Monday, July 12, 2021 through 4PM Thursday, July 22, 2021. You can also apply for the Rental Assistance Demonstration Program(former Public Housing properties) using the same application. To apply you can download a copy of the application by clicking the link below. Applications can be returned via email to [email protected] or mailed to Gastonia Housing Authority at PO Box 2398, Gastonia, NC 28053. You can also drop applications off at our office located at 340 West Long Avenue, Gastonia between the hours of 9MA and 4 PM Monday through Thursday. Our office is closed on Fridays. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list will close at 4PM on Thursday, July 22, 2021.

There is a rumor circulating that GHA will be paying the full amount of the April contract rent for participants on our programs. This is NOT true. Any participants who have experienced a decrease in their income should contact their caseworker to determine if a rent adjustment can be made. However, we must still calculate all remaining household income to determine how much the family's portion will be and how much subsidy to pay the landlord. This is a statutory requirement governed by Federal law. The Housing Authority is not permitted to deviate from the standard rent calculation methods. Program participants are still responsible for your portion of the monthly rent unless or until you report a change AND receive an updated rent notice from us. Some have asked why City of Gastonia Transit buses are running during the Stay at Home order or why we're not charging fares through April 29. For some residents, City buses are their only form of transportation. The bus is sometimes their only way to get to a grocery store or get to a job considered "essential" by law.

In addition to our office being closed to the public, GHA will begin transitioning staff to work from home. GHA will remain open to conduct essential business. Housing assistance payments and payments to our vendors are not expected to be disrupted. At this time, inspections annual and re-certifications will continue as scheduled. Non-essential business is subject to deferral at this time.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information

Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020 GHA's office will be closed to the public to aid in the prevention of the spread of COVID-19. Staff will still be working to assist you during these uncertain times. If you have paperwork to submit, please do so by email, mail or fax. If you need forms or general program information, please visit our website at www.ghanc.org. All other inquiries should be directed to your assigned caseworker. If you do not have an assigned caseworker, contact us at [email protected] or 704-349-5113.

The Gastonia Housing Authority (GHA) is actively monitoring information released about Coronavirus (COVID-19) and is taking precautionary measures to protect both our clientele and staff. These precautions are based on guidance issued by reputable agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

GHA is working to minimize public contact including:

The amount of people visiting main office and remote office locations
The need for in-office appointments
Limiting applicant and resident group meetings

At this time all payments, annual re-certifications and inspections will proceed as scheduled.

Updated information, forms, policies, and procedures are provided on GHA’s website, www.ghanc.org. Please utilize this website in lieu of visiting the main office when possible.
