❤️💛💚 Today, the City of Gastonia recognizes Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, history, culture, and the continued pursuit of equality. It is also a reminder that American history belongs to all of us, even the chapters that ask us to pause, reflect, learn, and grow together.

And before anyone wonders, “Is this day for me too?” — the answer is yes. Freedom is not a limited resource. Honoring one community’s journey does not exclude another; it strengthens our shared understanding of who we are and how far we’ve come.

We encourage residents to take time today to learn, celebrate, support local Juneteenth events, and reflect on the meaning of freedom in our community and across our nation. Everyone is invited to today's celebration at the Rotary Pavilion that begins at 5 PM (full details in the comment section below).

One look at this year's Municipal Citizens' Academy graduates and you'll see plenty of smiles for good reason. Since January, these residents have dedicated their time to learning how local government really works, meeting the people behind the scenes who keep Gastonia running, and gaining a deeper understanding of the services that impact our community every day.

From public safety and infrastructure to community development and City operations, these graduates now have firsthand knowledge of the work that goes into making Gastonia a great place to live, work, and play.

Interested in becoming a more informed and engaged citizen? Residents and business owners are encouraged to apply for the upcoming 2026-2027 Municipal Citizens’ Academy and experience local government from the inside out.

Want to hear directly from this year's graduates? Watch the June 16 City Council Meeting and hear their reflections on the program as they receive their certificates beginning at 37:20 (link in comments below).

🎓 Congratulations to the Municipal Citizens’ Academy Class of 2026, and thank you for your commitment to Gastonia! 👏 🎉
