💙 Stretching Sentences = Stronger Writing!💛

Our students are learning that great writers don’t stop at “yes,” “no,” or “I don’t know. ✏️📚

This week’s FMIS Family Team Focus: Stretching Short Answers into Full Sentences!📝✨

Try asking your child:
⭐️ “Can you tell me more?”
⭐️ “Why?”
⭐️ “How do you know?”
⭐️ “Can you explain your thinking?”

Instead of: “No.”
Try: “No, I don’t think ___ because ___.”**

Instead of: “I don’t know.”
Try: “I’m not sure yet, but I think ___ because ___.”

Those little extra words help students explain their thinking, add details, and become stronger writers and thinkers!

Families, keep stretching those sentences at home! 💙💛

🍧 Kona Ice is Coming to FMIS! 🚚

Our 5th grade students are getting a special treat on September 3 as part of our Freddie’s Food Truck project! Students will enjoy a hands-on experience designed to build their background knowledge about food trucks.

🍧 Cost: $5 per student
📅 Kona Ice Day: September 3
💰 Money Due: Wednesday, September 2
🍧 Each student will receive a medium-sized Kona Ice.

Families may send the $5 to school with their student to give to their teacher. We’re looking forward to a fun and tasty learning experience for our 5th graders! 🐯🍧

📚 This Week’s Family Team Focus: Sequencing Events!*🔄📖✨

When students read a story, it’s important that they understand what happened, when it happened, and how the events connect to one another.

Sequencing events helps students follow the plot, understand characters’ actions and decisions, identify important details, and explain how one event leads to another. 🧠💡

Families, you can practice this skill anywhere—even without a book! 😊

⭐️ After reading, ask, “What happened at the beginning? What happened in the middle? What happened at the end?”

⭐️ Ask, “Which event caused this to happen?”to encourage deeper thinking about how events are connected.

⭐️ Have your child retell a story in the correct order without looking back at the book.

⭐️ Mix up three or four events from a story and challenge your child to put them back in the correct order.

⭐️ When watching a movie or show together, pause and ask, “What do you think will happen next? What makes you think that?”🎬

And remember, sequencing isn't just about remembering a list of events. It’s about understanding how events fit together and why the order matters. When students can explain what happened and how one event led to another, they are showing deeper understanding of what they read. 📚🧠

Did you know that vocabulary is important in EVERY subject? Whether students are reading a story, solving a math problem, exploring science, or learning about history, understanding the words and language of the subject helps them understand the content! 🧠💡

When students know more words, they have more tools to understand, think, explain, and learn.

Families, we need your help!😊 Building vocabulary doesn’t have to feel like studying. You can build vocabulary anywhere and anytime!

⭐️ Ask your child about a new word they learned at school.
⭐️ Have them explain what the word means in their own words.
⭐️ Ask them to use the word in a sentence.
⭐️ Look for interesting words while reading together.
⭐️ Encourage your child to use specific, descriptive words when talking.
⭐️ Ask, “What does that word mean”when you hear an unfamiliar word.
⭐️ Challenge your child to teach YOU a new word! 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

And remember, vocabulary isn't just about memorizing definitions. It's about understanding words well enough to use them, connect them, and explain them.
