Recently I received an email from a longtime Garland resident who shared how much The Music Store (1005 Northwest Hwy, now closed) and Gary, the owner, had meant to him and others in our community:

“I’ve known Gary for years even if he didn’t know me, and his knowledge and service was undeniable… He serviced our community for decades. I just know there are many others who have been helped by him and were able to participate in band, orchestra, piano, guitar because of his shop. I’m oddly sentimental about this… At the very least I want Gary to know how he impacted our community and give others the opportunity to share the same.”

After reading this touching tribute I called the store and talked to Gary. I can see why generations of kids and parents would like and be drawn to him. He clearly has a heart for kids, and helping them make music.

“We’ve always been in the kid business,” Gary told me. “My wife was the piano and voice instructor. We’ve had generations come through our doors… we’ve served the children and even grandchildren of some of our first band students.”

I asked how he’d gotten into the music store business to start with, and what brought him to Garland:

“When I was in the Army I was in the band, then I heard that a local music store there near Fort Hood was hiring, so I worked there. I moved to DFW in the late 90’s and opened my store in a location convenient to serve Garland and Mesquite. I lived in Rowlett for a while before moving to Garland.”

So now that he’s closing the shop, will he still be involved in some way with musical instruments? Of course. He’ll be working for a company that creates custom label products for music stores—guitar polish and string cleaners, instrument safe microfiber cloths, germicidal mouthpiece sprays, etc.

Let’s wish Gary the very best as he continues to serve and support our local band community. ♥️

Lost Keys in Downtown Garland! Did anyone find them or turn them in?

“Yesterday my family went to the Downtown Square. They took pictures by the colorful pillars in front of Fortunate Sons. They forgot their keys there and cannot find them. They were on a red lanyard.”

🏗️ District 1 Construction Update: Sam’s Club Area

A District 1 resident recently emailed me asking what is being built in front of Sam’s Club, so I checked with City staff to get an answer.

The project currently under construction is 7 Brew Coffee.

📍 Location: The pad site in front of Sam’s Club at 5050 N. Garland Avenue, near the Sonic Drive-In.

☕ This project will be a drive-through coffee shop.

Because this use fits the previously approved zoning for a drive-through restaurant at this location, it did not need to return to City Council for another vote.

Thank you to the resident who reached out with the question. If you have questions about projects, developments, or City services in District 1, please feel free to contact me. I will continue sharing updates to help keep our community informed.

Building a Better Garland Together

📍 Địa điểm: Khu đất phía trước Sam’s Club tại 5050 N. Garland Avenue, gần Sonic Drive-In.

Attempted Bank Robbery Suspect Taken into Custody

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Garland Police Officers received information that a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery was staying at a motel located in the 200 block of West I-30 Freeway.

The suspect was identified as 56-year-old Billy Jean Stewart of Rowlett. Stewart was wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery that occurred in Dallas the previous day and was considered armed and dangerous.

Officers responded to the location and were able to confirm Stewart was inside a motel room. After repeated attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, the Garland Police Department SWAT Team was activated due to the elevated risk presented by the situation.

Over the course of several hours, officers and SWAT personnel continued efforts to gain Stewart’s voluntary surrender. When those efforts proved unsuccessful, SWAT officers made entry into the room and safely took Stewart into custody without incident or injury.

Stewart is currently being held at the Garland Detention Center on the following warrants:

Robbery - Attempt to Commit - Dallas County SO - No Bond
Motion to Revoke - Manufacture/Deliver a Controlled Substance Greater Than 200 Grams - No Bond
