This morning, Engine 5 attended an LDH (large diameter hose) drill in coordination with the Bergen County Fire Coordinators and 6 additional towns. Members trained on a large scale drafting water relay that extended over a mile long. Our younger members used the drill as a valuable lesson in hose placement, management, and packing.

Last night, Company 5 had the privilege of hosting a celebration for Honorary Chief Edward Kovach in recognition of his completion of 50 years of active service in the Garfield Volunteer Fire Department. Eddie has served many roles in the company, but most importantly Eddie has acted as a role model, mentor, and leader to many generations of company members. Eddie was honored by the Garfield Fire Companies as well as City, County, State and Federal officials. Thank you Eddie for the selfless dedication you have shown to the City for the past 50 years!

Looking back at 7 years ago… Engine 5 was requested mutual aid into Elmwood Park to operate at the infamous Marcel Paper Factory fire. Crews operated over night and assisted in water relay and drafting operations from the Passaic River. Engine 5 responded back later in the week for a fire watch detail with other mutual aid partners.

Early this morning, shortly after midnight, the Garfield Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire on Hartman Ave. Several responding Chiefs arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire in a residential structure. Members were met with heavy fire conditions in the second and third floors. Members also had to battle the elements with temperatures near zero degrees. Thankfully all residents evacuated the structure safely before FD arrival. A second alarm was struck during the incident as well as additional mutual aid companies being requested to the scene. Companies remained on scene hitting deep seated pockets of fire until 9am. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Garfield Bureau of Fire Prevention. Thank you to all our mutual aid partners who assisted on scene and provided station coverage during the incident.

The members of Company 5 have been manning the firehouse all day to ensure a safe and quick response in case of emergencies during the storm. While members do not normally man the firehouse around the clock, due to the extreme risk of driving in these conditions, they are. Take this as a plea to stay off the roads and let the DPW work to keep the roads as clear as possible! Stay warm, stay safe! Garfield FD is here for you in case of any emergency!
