October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜 The Gardner Police Department’s Domestic Violence Memorial Garden provides a meaningful way to remember victims, honor survivors and stand with those affected by domestic violence.

💜 Returning This Year: Our Domestic Violence Memorial Garden 💜

Detective Odle is honored to once again recognize and remember victims and survivors of domestic violence through the Gardner Police Department’s Domestic Violence Memorial Garden.

Submitted names will be displayed on purple flags along the east side of the Gardner Justice Center throughout October. Flags honoring individuals recognized last year will continue to be displayed, and we will accept new names beginning now through the end of October.

Please do not compromise your safety or the safety of someone you love. If submitting a full name is not safe, you may provide initials or simply describe your relationship to the individual, such as “My Mom.”

🚧 UPDATE: 183rd Street Closure

Johnson County is unable to complete the installation of the storm pipes across 183rd Street today. As a result, 183rd Street between Cedar Street and Sumac Street will remain closed overnight and will not reopen this evening as originally planned.

JOCO will place lights on the barricades to improve visibility for motorists traveling through the area.

The new estimated reopening is by 3 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Please continue to use Cedar Street and Sumac Street to White Drive as an alternate route and plan ahead for additional travel time. Thank you for your patience while this work is completed.

Johnson County will be completing a one-day utility repair on Tuesday, Sept. 1, requiring a temporary closure of 183rd Street between Cedar Street and Sumac Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The work will include removing old pipes and installing new ones. After the repair, the area will be filled with gravel temporarily. Crews will return in approximately one to two weeks to complete the final asphalt repair.

Traffic can use Cedar Street and Sumac Street to White Drive to get around the closure.

Motorists should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

The city has created a Budget in Brief document that simplifies the Draft FY 2027 Budget to increase transparency and accessibility of Gardner’s financial reports. The 11-page online booklet uses graphics and charts to illustrate the city’s revenue sources and how they are distributed. The Budget in Brief is available at gardnerkansas.gov/BudgetinBrief2027.

As a reminder, the city will hold public hearings to consider exceeding the revenue-neutral rate and adopting the FY 2027 Budget on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. The hearings will take place at the start of the City Council meeting at Gardner City Hall, 120 E. Main St. Citizens are encouraged to attend, comment and ask questions.

The City of Gardner will hold public hearings to consider exceeding the revenue-neutral rate and for the adoption of the FY 2027 Budget on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:00 p.m. The hearings will take place at the start of Tuesday night's City Council meeting at Gardner City Hall, 120 E. Main St. At this time, citizens are encouraged to make comments and ask questions. The FY 2027 Budget can be viewed via the following link: www.gardnerkansas.gov/DraftBudgetFY2027

Revenue-Neutral Rate Overview:

✅The City Council has expressed intent to keep a mill levy rate of 17.814 mills, the same as last year.
✅The proposed 17.814 mills exceed the calculated revenue-neutral rate of 16.933.
✅The Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) is the tax rate that would generate the same property tax revenue as was levied in the previous year, using the current year's total assessed valuation.
✅The city would use the additional revenue to help offset increased operating costs and fund vehicle and equipment replacements.
