The federal cuts to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act’s Essential Plan, and SNAP in the House Budget Reconciliation Proposal are inhumane and would also drive up costs to our taxpayers and place increased financial stress on hospitals and EMS. Some 200,000 New Yorkers would immediately lose healthcare with cuts to the Essential Plan, and an estimated 1.5-2 million New Yorkers would lose their healthcare as other Medicaid changes are rolled out in the coming years. Cuts to SNAP would reduce assistance and shift costs to states and counties (an estimated $240 million annual increase in costs to NY counties).

This amounts to about $1 trillion in proposed federal cuts to these basic safety net programs over 10 years. Meanwhile, the budget proposal includes $3.8 trillion in tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthiest 1% of households while significantly increasing the national debt.
