The Physical Education and Health Education program is a dual certification program that prepares students for teacher certification in New York state programs in health and physical education. The program is 120 credits that include general education, 40 credits of physical education core, 15 credits of physical education methodology or skills courses, 30 credits of health education core, 18 credits of pedagogical core, 8 credits of anatomy and physiology, practicum and student teaching in both physical education and health education. Required GPA: 2.75
Credits Required for Major: 68
Credits Required to Graduate: 120

M.A. in Health Education Programs

Candidates for the Master of Arts in school health education should have an undergraduate background in health or health-related areas. When candidates have degrees in other areas, they may be required as part of the program to complete course work in addition to the requirements of the graduate program: human biology (anatomy and physiology), health-related courses, and education courses. Advanced Certificate in Health Education

The Advanced Certificate in Health Education is a 19 credit program that prepares educators to provide preK-12 health education instruction and intervention. Upon completion of the program the candidates are eligible for New York State Health Education certification. The program is designed for students who are coming from physical education and health-related areas who may hold a valid New York State Teacher Certification. These students may have some of the (1) pedagogical core requirements and the (2) health content requirements that are needed to be certified and to meet the prerequisite course requirements. Some students may need to take more prerequisite courses depending on their background and previous course work. For qualified students who already have a Master’s degree in another area or are in the process of obtaining one, this program therefore offers an alternative route to eligibility for New York State Certification in Health Education without completing a separate Master’s degree in Health Education. in Community Health Promotion

The Master of Arts in community health promotion is a 37 credit program, 25 credits in required courses and 12 credits in elective courses (depending on the candidate’s prior course work and experience), designed to prepare community health promotion specialists. This program prepares students to meet the expanding need for health education professionals capable of working with the community in a variety of public, private, and professional settings.
