The County wanted to build a big airport for Detroit and other cities around here. They wanted it to be as near Detroit as possible. At the time, much of the land east of Inkster Rd was farmland. The County wanted the middle of the airport to be in Garden City. This meant that nearly all the houses east of Harrison would have to be torn down. One landing strip of the airport was to run right through the present Lathers Elementary School playground. Luckily for us, the County changed its mind. Now the airport is south of us at Middlebelt and Goddard Rds.
I have been looking for info on this forever. I don't remember where I found the paragraph above.

The 1940s
The Fire Department said to have started when the Village of Garden City bought its first fire truck, which was stored at Ed Weston's Gulf Station garage at the Northwest corner of Ford Rd and Middlebelt. Paul Lance was the Chief of Police, was also Fire Chief and the only man on the payroll. The rest of the gang were all volunteers, some being on the day shift and others on the afternoon shift at Ford or other plants, or doing business in town like Sam Petrere, the barber who once left a customer in his barber chair as he dashed off to the call of the siren.
