GCFD is conducting a controlled burn at the Kiddie Pond beginning this morning at 8:30. Periodic visible flames and heavy smoke may be present. Please be cautious if you are traveling in the area of South US Highway 83 near the riverbed.

The Kiddie Pond will be closed for the duration of the burn. If you have any questions, please contact the Parks Department at 620-271-1574.

Inside Academy 26-1: Weeks 1 & 2 Recap

Our recruits are hitting the ground running and putting in the work. Here is a look at what they have tackled so far:

Week 1: Focused on PPE familiarization, rapid gear drills, and mask-ups. Recruits moved into Engine Operations, mastering 1 ¾” and 2 ½” hose handling and advancement. They wrapped up the week with primary search and rescue drills on the first and second stories.

Week 2: Shifted focus to advanced Search & Rescue, including VEIS (Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search) tactics. Recruits practiced throwing ladders for second-story window entries and trained extensively on Mayday situations for self-rescue and downed-firefighter rescue.

STRUCTURE FIRE – 1700 E. US Highway 50

Garden City, KS (June 4, 2026): At approximately 7:34 p.m., June 3, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a structure fire at 1700 E. US Highway 50, Garden City Township, Finney County, Kansas.

Initial reports indicated smoke coming from the rear of the property with no visible flames. When they arrived, responding crews observed heavy smoke coming from the structure and began firefighting operations. Firefighters quickly located the fire in the southeast portion of the building, and additional apparatus and water tenders were requested to support suppression efforts.

Investigator LT Becker responded to the scene for investigation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No injuries were reported, and damage estimates are not known at this time.

The soft, gentle rain today was a blessing. 🌧️🙏 We are grateful for every single drop of rain—and we can use much more!

As the weather shifts, we look back at some of our crew's pictures from this week while we were helping our neighbors.

When fire threatens our community or the next county over, the lines disappear. We are all one team fighting the same battle. Neighbors helping neighbors—that is who we are.
