This morning, members of Garden City Fire-Rescue joined fellow first responders at Enmarket Arena for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, hosted by the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association.

For firefighters and first responders, the 9/11 Stair Climb is more than a memorial. It is a promise to remember.

On September 11, 2001, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders rushed toward unimaginable danger while thousands of others were trying to escape. That day, 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police Department officers, 23 New York City Police Department officers, and other emergency personnel made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

During memorial stair climbs across the country, first responders climb in honor of those who never came home. Each flight of stairs represents the courage, selflessness, and sacrifice of the men and women who answered the call that morning.

For those of us who serve today, participating is a way to carry their memory forward. Some climb in full gear. Some carry the name or photograph of a fallen first responder. Everyone climbs with the same purpose: to honor their sacrifice and ensure their legacy is never forgotten.

Garden City Fire-Rescue is honored to have taken part in this morning’s climb alongside our brothers and sisters from across the fire service and first responder community.

Thank you to the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association for hosting an outstanding and meaningful event and for bringing our community together to remember and honor those we lost.

We climb for those who climbed before us.

This morning, Garden City Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the area of Telfair Place for a reported vehicle fire.

Battalion 201 arrived on scene and confirmed a working vehicle fire involving four vehicles. Engine 202 arrived shortly after and immediately went into fast attack mode, initiating fire suppression operations.

Reserve Engine 202 arrived and established a water supply while providing additional manpower for fireground operations. Engine 201 staged on scene with additional personnel as crews worked to bring the fire under control and mitigate remaining hazards.

Garden City Fire Marshals responded to investigate the incident. The preliminary investigation indicates that a fuel line was struck while work was being performed on one of the vehicles, resulting in the fire.

This evening, Garden City Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the area of I-516 and Highway 21 for a reported vehicle fire.

Engine 202 and Battalion 201 arrived on scene and confirmed a working vehicle fire involving the engine compartment. All occupants were safely out of the vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

Engine 202 immediately initiated a fast attack and began extinguishing the fire. Engine 201 arrived shortly after and assisted with extinguishment and overhaul operations.

The fire was brought under control, and crews remained on scene until all hazards were mitigated.

Truck 202 was initially requested for mutual aid for a confirmed residential structure fire. While en route, Truck 202 was rerouted to assist with a reported high-rise/high-life-hazard fire.

Earlier today, the City of Garden City held an Employee Appreciation Luncheon to recognize and thank the dedicated employees who help make our city what it is.

As part of the luncheon, several members of Garden City Fire-Rescue were recognized for their years of service at Garden City and continued dedication to our community:

• Fire Marshal Roberts – 10 Years
• Battalion Chief Ancell – 5 Years
• Captain Fain – 5 Years
• Captain Gordon – 5 Years
• Lieutenant Shelley – 5 Years

We would like to congratulate each of them on reaching these milestones and thank them for the hard work, professionalism, and commitment they demonstrate every day. Their efforts make a lasting impact not only within Garden City Fire-Rescue, but throughout the City of Garden City as a whole.

Congratulations, and thank you for your continued service and dedication.

Garden City Fire-Rescue was proud to support this week’s NPQ Swift Water Technician training.

Swift-water rescue requires specialized knowledge, technical skill, and strong teamwork. Having the opportunity to share experience and help train firefighters from across the region strengthens not only individual departments, but our collective ability to respond when water and flood emergencies impact our communities.

We appreciate Statesboro Fire Department for coordinating the training, Splash in the Boro for providing an excellent training environment, and all of the participating agencies for their commitment to training and preparedness.

This evening, Garden City Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the 4800 block of Old Louisville Road for a report of an outside fire. While en route, responding units were advised that a large dumpster was on fire and threatening a nearby building.

Engine 202 arrived on scene and confirmed a working dumpster fire. Prior to the arrival of fire crews, employees on the property utilized equipment to move the burning dumpster away from the building, reducing the immediate threat to the structure.

The crew from Engine 202 initiated a fast attack and quickly brought the fire under control. Engine 201 arrived and established a water supply for Engine 202. Truck 202 also responded, with crews from Engine 201 and Truck 202 assisting with overhaul operations to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

After confirming the fire was out and no further hazards remained, the scene was turned over to the property owner.

On Tuesday, Garden City Fire-Rescue responded to a significant incident within our response area. Due to the nature of the incident, only limited information will be released.

Our personnel operated alongside our mutual aid partners under a unified effort to safely manage the incident and ensure the safety of everyone involved. We would like to thank the Savannah Fire Department, United States Coast Guard and United States Customs and Border Patrol for their professionalism, expertise, and assistance throughout the operation.

We also extend our appreciation to Pooler Fire-Rescue for providing station coverage while our crews remained committed to the incident. Their support ensured that emergency services remained available to the residents and visitors of Garden City throughout the duration of the response.

Incidents like this demonstrate the value of investing in specialized training and preparing our personnel for complex, low-frequency events. The knowledge and skills our members have gained through advanced training directly contribute to our ability to operate safely and effectively when these incidents occur. Responses like this also reinforce the importance of strong interagency partnerships and the ability of multiple agencies to work together seamlessly toward a common goal.

Today, members of Garden City Fire-Rescue trained alongside Pooler Fire-Rescue during a Truck Company training session. These opportunities allow firefighters from neighboring departments to work together, refine critical skills, and build the relationships that make mutual aid responses more effective.

When agencies train together, they respond together with confidence.

We appreciate the training opportunity with Pooler Fire-Rescue and the commitment both departments share to protecting our communities.
