We want to remind residents: never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home. This can create a serious fire risk and may also lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Ovens and stoves are made for cooking only, not heating. If your home is having heating issues, use safe heating options and make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.

As temperatures drop, many residents turn to space heaters to stay warm. If you’re using one, please take a few simple steps to prevent a fire. Keep your space heater at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including blankets, curtains, furniture, clothing, and paper. Always place it on a flat, stable surface, and never run it while you’re sleeping or leave it on when you leave the room. Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, avoid using power strips or extension cords. If you have children or pets, make sure the heater is in a safe spot where it won’t be bumped or knocked over. Stay safe and warm, Garden City.

Throughout the winter season, please help out the Garden City Fire Department by keeping fire hydrants clear and accessible. If you see a hydrant covered in snow, if you are able, shovel a 3-foot path around it. It could make all the difference during an emergency and help protect your home and your neighbors’ homes.
