The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One. It is forecast to become a Tropical Storm as it moves along the northwest Gulf through Wednesday. Any local impacts will be limited to the coast, including a chance for additional rainfall and an increase in life-threatening rip currents.

Today we celebrate our 251st anniversary!

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Since then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has responded to changing defense requirements and played an integral part in the development of the country. Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, and thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts for the Nation.

𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿’𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 – 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!

The existing Port Arthur levee system built by USACE between 1966 and 1983 was not Port Arthur’s first seawall.

The devastating 𝟭𝟵𝟭𝟱 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 pushed an 11-foot-tall storm surge through Sabine Pass, killing six residents. The storm led to calls for a 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆-𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹. In 1929, Gov. Dan Moody signed legislation for a $1.75 million 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 to be built along Port Arthur’s the Sabine-Neches Waterway. Completed mid-1931, the levee system provided 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to an elevation of 𝟵 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗦𝗟. The 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 protects against 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 of 𝟭𝟰 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗦𝗟. The 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 will increase the levee’s height 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟭-𝟰 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁, utilizing advances in flood modeling and construction techniques.

The 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 will also help protect a 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 that has breakbulk and military cargo capability, and also processes 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘆. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 go hand-in-hand with 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.
