Galveston County officials joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, along with state and federal partners, at the groundbreaking ceremony for Davie Defense’s new shipbuilding operation at Gulf Copper Shipyard.

This significant investment marks a major milestone for Galveston County and strengthens Texas’ leadership in maritime industry and national defense. The project is expected to bring long-term economic opportunity, support job creation, and enhance America’s shipbuilding capacity.

Hurricane season is officially underway, and now is the time for Galveston County residents to review their emergency plans and prepare for the months ahead.

Now is the time to take advantage of preparedness resources available through the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management, including the Galveston County Disaster Guide, evacuation information, emergency planning materials, and hurricane preparedness tips.

Preparedness starts with three simple steps:

Make a Plan — Know where you will go and how you will communicate if severe weather threatens our area.

Build a Kit — Stock essential supplies including water, food, medications, batteries, important documents, and supplies for pets.

Stay Informed — Monitor trusted local news, weather updates, and official Galveston County emergency communications throughout hurricane season.

Preparing before a storm develops is one of the most important things residents can do to protect themselves, their families, and their property.

Dickinson Middle School’s SOAR program (Sisters Owning Accountability Respectfully) truly lived up to their name during their visit to the Wayne Johnson Senior Enrichment Program! These amazing young ladies spent the day connecting with our seniors over games of bingo, laughter, and conversation. While these students are learning to SOAR, they also lifted the spirits of our seniors in a heartfelt way. It was a beautiful day of intergenerational fellowship, reminding us all that joy, kindness and connection have no age limit.

Our senior centers across the county came together, each in their own way, to honor Memorial Day through meaningful crafts, shared stories and heartfelt fellowship. It was a beautiful reminder that even in quiet moments of creativity and connection, we can pay tribute to something much greater than ourselves.

As we reflect, we are reminded of the courage, sacrifice and love shown by those who gave their lives for the freedoms we cherish. Their legacy calls us to live with gratitude, to serve others with compassion, and to stand united as one community. We also hold in our hearts the families who carry their memory each day, wishing them comfort and peace.

At our centers, honoring Memorial Day wasn’t just about remembrance – it’s about how we live. Through kindness, connection and community our seniors continue to carry forward the spirit of those we remember on Memorial Day.
