Galveston Independent School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Maryori “MJ” Aceituno as the new principal of Burnet Elementary School.
Aceituno’s journey in education began as a bilingual student in Galveston ISD after immigrating from Guatemala at the age of 10. Inspired by the educators who invested in her success, she has dedicated her career to serving students, families, and educators throughout the region.
“MJ’s story is a powerful example of the life-changing impact our schools can have on students,” said Dr. Matthew Neighbors, Superintendent of Schools for Galveston ISD. “As a former Galveston ISD student who has returned to serve our community, she embodies the spirit of our mission to 'Raise the Grade' and maintain 'High Expectations' for every learner. MJ understands our students, our families, and the importance of creating a culture where academic excellence, opportunity, and student success are at the forefront. We are excited to welcome her as the new principal of Burnet Elementary and look forward to the leadership she will provide in helping our students reach their fullest potential.”
Aceituno began her educational career as a bilingual teacher at Oppe Elementary, where she served from 2013 to 2019. She later served as a Collaborative Learning Leader from 2019 to 2021, helping support instructional excellence and teacher development. In 2021, she was named the district’s Bilingual/ESL Instructional Coach, a role she held through 2022 before advancing to assistant principal positions in both Galveston ISD and Dickinson ISD.
Throughout her career, Aceituno has led instructional coaching, professional learning, curriculum implementation, and the successful implementation of bilingual and multilingual education programs. She has also played a key role in campus improvement efforts focused on strengthening instruction and improving student outcomes for all learners.
Aceituno holds a master's degree in educational leadership and is excited to return to the community that helped shape her educational journey.
