What is the Empty Bowl Event? Many years ago, a Junior High Art Teacher wanted to show his students how The Art Community could address social issues in their community. He taught them to hand fashion ceramic bowls and they hosted an event at which people paid an entry fee, selected a bowl and ate soup and bread and the proceeds were donated to a local hunger organization. Inspired by that event, thousands of communities around the world have begun to host Empty Bowl Events to address social issues in their communities.
Twenty-five years ago, Madeleine Baker, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship brought he concept to Galveston to support the works of the Jesse Tree, a local non-profit, 501c3 organization that adapts technology to offer compassionate care, based on works of mercy to those in need in Galveston County. Madeleine taught a core group to fashion and glaze ceramic bowls – from 300 to 400 annually – and Galveston’s Empty Bowl event was born.
When you enter The Garten Verein, you exchange your ticket and select a ceramic bowl (yours to keep) then proceed to sample delicious soups donated by some of Galveston’s finest restaurants at six Soup Stations – each serving two or three varieties of soup. Add some bread and crackers, a glass of wine and dessert while listening to the music of Concert Pianist Hector Bizio. Peruse the art objects offered at The Silent Auction and mingle with the crowd for one of Galveston’s most beloved events. Each year the event raises from $35,000 to $40,000 as a result of the generosity of The UU Bowlers and those who support the event.
The Jesse Tree has served thousands of Galveston County residents through it’s Bilingual Telephone Helpline; The Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), The Survivor’s Support Network that responds to assist the families and friends of drowning victims on our beaches and Chronic Conditions Management Coordination. The programs are designed to provide community opportunities to perform works of mercy and to provide compassionate, dignified care for those in need. The name was taken from Scriptures: A shoot will come up from the stem of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit. (Isaiah 11:1)
