MENTORSHIP

While we were in Cambridge, Maryland, over the past couple of days, I was interviewed by a few local journalists. We had over a thousand people tour the ship, and hundreds more came down to see us from the dock. Many of the questions we were asked and the stories we told reflect that ELISSA is not simply a historic vessel functioning as a museum, but is still an active, very much “alive” sailing ship.

Absolutely - ELISSA serves as an example of a late-19th-century square-rigged ship that people can observe for her layout, rigging, and structure. But it’s the reality that she is NOT simply “operational”, but is in fact OPERATING, which sets ELISSA apart and makes her so important. Essential to her being able to sail is her crew, and the crew would be nothing without their training.

As many of you are aware, Galveston Historical Foundation has the Barque ELISSA certified as a “training vessel." But to think of her educational mission as just happening when trainees come aboard is to miss a HUGE part of the teaching that occurs: the ongoing training which every member of the crew experiences.

Along with being a traditionally rigged vessel, ELISSA is also continuing the nautical tradition of apprenticing, learning through doing. A sailing ship can take a person with zero experience as a deckhand aboard, and if they are attentive and interested, the more senior members of the crew guide and train them. They advance upwards through the ranks, coming “up through the hawsepipe” to potentially become officers. Then it is incumbent upon them to share what they’ve learned with the next crop of sailors.

It’s this ongoing maritime training, a natural, inherent feature of sailing ships, which sustains ELISSA and keeps our maritime skills and traditions alive.

Regards,
Captain Andrew Ellers

1884, 1986, 2026

We have record of ELISSA being in NYC in 1884. In 1986, we sailed to New York in support of OpSail's "Salute to Liberty" event, celebrating the centenary of the iconic monument. In 2026, we'll return to these historic waters.

I try not to overuse the "once-in-a-lifetime" phrase, but it can be hard not to on this voyage. For those interested in spending more time with us in New York, info is below. Each of these offerings directly supports the ship, voyage, and ongoing programs. I hope you can join us. These kinds of moments are best shared with guests along for the ride. Full details are at https://galveston250.com/ports/new-york-city-new-york/.

* July 3 / Class B Parade of Sail Party (12:30-3:30 pm) | A front row viewing of the first parade from the deck of ELISSA. We'll have live commentary of the ships, appetizers, and drinks.

* July 3 / New York Harbor Sunset sail (6-8:30 pm) | An evening sailing in New York Harbor! Food, pre-departure toast, and a special challenge coin are all part of this remarkable night.

* July 4 / Parade of Sail Passage (5:30 am-4 pm) | Sail on board with us as we lead the Class A ships into the festival, past the Statue of Liberty, and into New York Harbor. Food, gifts, and more for this iconic day on the water with us.

* July 4 / Stars and Sails Fourth of July Party (7:30-10:30 pm) | The best seat in the house to celebrate and see the incredible 4th of July fireworks over New York. Food, drink, music, and more are all part of this one.

We hope to see you on board and out on the water with us in a few weeks while we add another chapter to ELISSA's storied history.

Today's photos are shots taken directly by crewmember Julien Clifford over the past few weeks.

Will Wright

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

For the past two weeks, Galveston Historic Seaport : Home of the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa voyage has taken a well-deserved center stage on our online coverage. The reception we’ve seen from people along her route has been incredible, and it’s been matched inside Galveston Historical Foundation as we continue our work “behind the sails” in preparation for her upcoming Galveston 250 festival stops, sailings, and appearances.

Today and tomorrow, while the crew enjoys Cambridge’s hospitality, I get to show off some of the fun in store for those joining in New York City and our other summer ports. This effort, sailing a National Historic Landmark like ELISSA, requires all hands on deck to ensure we’re prepared to deliver an experience that matches this once-in-a-lifetime event. It’s a special moment for us, and for our visitors too.

Last week, Denise Alexander, GHF’s Chief of Museums & External Relations, and I took a few days to visit the Brooklyn Bridge Marina (our home for the festivities), attend a few meetings, and catch up with some friends who will be lending their time, talents, and love of Galveston to make our Sail4th 250 stop as legendary as the occasion calls for.

1 - The Manhattan view from the very location ELISSA will be docked at the Brooklyn Bridge Marina.
2 - A fantastic visit with our new friends at the British Consulate General NY.
3 - Pizza. So much pizza.
4 - The one and only Dandy Wellington and His Band, who will be our performer on board for our 4th of July party.
5 - Our visit on the pier was a hot one, and we had to cool down.
6 - Have Stetson. Will travel.
7 - ELISSA in 1986.

I’ll be back tomorrow with details on all the fun we've got in store for our visit to Brooklyn.

Regards,
Will Wright

CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND

We headed north in the Chesapeake Bay yesterday, and this morning we ran up the Choptank River to beautiful Cambridge, MD.

One of the things that is extra-special about coming into these small ports is that, sometimes, better than PR releases or social media posts is simply catching people's attention with our towering, square-rigged masts suddenly appearing on their waterfront.

Free Public Tours today & tomorrow (Saturday & Sunday) 12 - 5 pm.

Captain Andrew Ellers

GRAB BAG - RANDOM BITS OF THIS AND THAT

DATA POINTS: We reached our furthest point south off the Florida Keys last week. Some of these records are the furthest ELISSA has reached in 40 years. Last night at about 2 am, northeast of Cape Hatteras, we reached our furthest point east in forty years. We are currently heading slightly west into the Chesapeake Bay, but will head farther east again when we reach NYC and Boston. Several days ago, we passed the latitude of Galveston, so now every minute we head north is setting a new “urthest north in 40 years!

NON-STOP SAILING: Proud to say that after sailing off the dock and down the channel in Fort Pierce, we went nearly four complete days without any use of the engine. That’s close to 700 nautical miles covered under sail alone. 'Fair Winds & Following Seas’ indeed! All good things must come to an end, though, and with a change in the weather today came shifting and diminishing winds, so we have thrown in the towel for now and are motoring the final 60 or so miles up and into the Chesapeake Bay.

HISTORY: Often when ELISSA is mentioned, so is “1877," the year she was built. Consider this: earlier this morning, we sailed past Kitty Hawk, the site of the Wright brothers’ first manned flight in 1903. When that happened, ELISSA had already been sailing for 26 years!

NEXT STOP: We will arrive tomorrow morning (Saturday, 6/19) in Cambridge, Maryland, stay a few days, and probably depart on Tuesday. It’ll give everyone a chance to get some rest and an opportunity to do some repairs and maintenance on ELISSA. We are working to offer free deck tours for the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Regards,
Captain Andrew Ellers

SENSE of SCALE

I brought a new camera along for this trip, my last point-and-shoot having taken a tumble on a small-boat journey a while back. I’ve been loading it full of pictures from the same angles over the past several days. A boring concept at first brush, but when you couple that with the variability of weather, sail plan, and sea state over the span of days we’ve had, that repetition of angles takes on complexity.

Getting to know ELISSA from the perspective of quartermaster for the Main Mast Watch has been a joy. Each change in the forces acting on the ship and the subsequent adaptation of sail plan and trim have helped me get to know her a little better. To feel the way she responds almost grudgingly to a turn to starboard while the prop encourages a turn to port. The way she becomes lively and spirited with the lift of sail, able to turn so quickly that the compass card has difficulty keeping up.

To touch on Captain Ellers’s metaphors of galloping along, I’m accustomed to sailing schooners akin to show horses. Boats with creators like Alden, Crowninshield, and Burgess in their lineage. Sailing vessels with a turning radius that’ll make a modern yacht look twice, and a wetted surface conducive to dressage in tight spaces.

I’ve had precious few opportunities to sail aboard ships of ELISSA’s scale, made for heavy loads and deep draft. In the “following seas” of the past few days, my camera struggles to do justice, but this ship lopes along where those yachty ‘show horses’ would be prone to shying.

Learning to steer ELISSA in these conditions has been an interesting lesson. Her scale relative to most of my experience first set me to muscling her head around and expecting her to settle up, only to find her less than receptive to the techniques I’ve learned from those smaller, “quicker” vessels with yacht lines. Allowing her room to move within her environment and find the way to carry her load forward with the least resistance lets the helm respond to a lighter touch.

As my camera struggles to keep up, the crew has been rolling with the sail evolutions and adapting to changes. Rising to the scale of their journey. I’m grateful to be counted among them. Amazing how far a National Historic Landmark can go when she decides to step out and get her feet wet.

Yours truly,
Nate Seward
