Cosumnes River Preserve

Cosumnes River Preserve www.cosumnes.org The Preserve parking lots are open 8am-5pm every day of the week. Dogs are not allowed on the Preserve. No camping or fires are permitted.

The Visitors Center is open from 9-3 on weekdays and staffed on most weekends by Volunteer Naturalists- All recreation use is FREE. Bicycles, scooters, and skateboards are not allowed. This is a preserve, not a park. Thank you for helping us keep it safe and protected for the native flora and fauna! All photographs posted by the Cosumnes River Preserve were taken by staff and on the Preserve unless otherwise noted.

It's been an exciting nesting season so far!

Our volunteer nest box monitors have documented:
🌿 Over 70 fledged Tree Swallow clutches
💙 13 Western Bluebird clutches
🤎 2 Ash-throated Flycatcher clutches
💚 2 House Wren clutches

Even more exciting, many of our nest boxes are already hosting a second round of nesting, giving even more young birds a chance to take flight this season.

Thank you to our dedicated volunteers who help monitor these nest boxes and contribute valuable data that supports bird conservation throughout the Preserve.

A life jacket loaner station is available at the CRP Dock for visitors to borrow life jackets before heading out to paddle, fish, or explore. Safety starts before you launch — wear your life jacket and enjoy the Preserve responsibly. 🌿💧

🌿🐦 Birding at the Cosumnes River Preserve this week? See if you can spot an Ash-throated Flycatcher!

These slender birds are known for their pale gray coloring, rusty-colored tails, and habit of perching quietly before quickly flying out to catch insects. During spring and summer, they can often be found in wooded habitats and around open areas throughout the Preserve. ☀️

Whether you’re an experienced birder or just getting started, every visit to the Preserve offers a chance to discover something new. 👀

Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer on National Trails Day! Whether you were on the boardwalk or working with Alex Cabrera, we appreciate all the hard work. We just wanted to highlight a few of the native species we planted today, like mugwort (photo #1), goldenrod ( #2), and rosemallow ( #3). We also wanted to give a special shout out to Robin, one of our long-time volunteers who's personally to thank for how pretty our Preserve looks. Thanks again to everyone for a great Trails Day, and we hope to see you next year!

🌳 The Valley Oak is one of the most iconic trees of California’s Central Valley 🌿

Once covering vast stretches of the Central Valley, these massive trees provide shade, habitat, and food for countless wildlife species. Their acorns support birds and mammals, while their sprawling branches create important nesting and resting areas throughout the ecosystem. 🦅🐿️

Valley oaks can live for hundreds of years and are specially adapted to California’s hot, dry summers and seasonal flooding. Today, the remaining woodlands are an important reminder of the Central Valley’s natural history. 💚

Next time you visit the Preserve, take a moment to appreciate these incredible native giants. ☀️
