This afternoon Crew B of your Gallup Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building at Gallup High School. The building was evacuated by staff in accordance with their plans and a RAVE alert was activated notifying Metro Dispatch and Gallup Fire ever before a 911 call was made.

The cause of the smoke was found to be a malfunctioning HVAC unit.

The building was cleared and turned back over to staff.

All students and staff are safe. This is a great example of how GMCS is prepared to protect their students because today all the plans that are practiced got used for real.

Around lunch time today, Crew B of your Gallup Fire Department responded to the north side on a report of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival crews found three vehicles involved all with moderate to major damage. A total of 7 occupants were assessed and 5 were transported to the hospital. No fatalities were noted.

On September 8, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Gallup Police Department received reports of a bear sighting near the Canyon De Chelly area within the Indian Hills subdivision. The Department of Game and Fish has been notified, and we advise the public to remain vigilant.

This morning Crew A of your Gallup Fire Department responded to HWY 491 on a report of a brush fire burning behind a business, with multiple 911 callers reporting it. Crews arrived on scene and found a transient camp that was fully involved along with brush burning. Crews deployed an attack line and used handtools to extinguish the fire. No buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported.
