What was that? Gondor is calling? No- the gar are spawning! Watch the video for an underwater look at longnose gar as they lay thousands of eggs in the creek. They can be hard to spot above water. If you watch the water surface, you will see the groups breach the surface to "gulp" air. Keep an eye out for this behavior, and be prepared to tell your friends about how you thought you saw a crocodile today, or an alligator gar. Longnose gar aren't quite large enough for that "tall" tale.

Freshwater mussels are the animal you never knew you couldn't live without. Now this animal might not be as cute, or return your smiles- but they are a vital part of what make the Darby Creek so stable. It's hard to visit our park and not have an encounter with mussels- either with the shells along the creek trails, or with the displays within the nature center.

You can learn even more about these species by checking out this cool mobile display in our nature center now through May 25th!

How's it hanging? Here's everything you needed to know about the gray tree frog: it's not always gray, and it's not always in a tree.

The gray tree frog is a master at camouflage, and will reflect the greens or grays of the part of the tree they are resting on. Or in this case, the cattail they are patiently waiting to call in a mate on. This might not have been everything you needed to know, but still interesting!
