Exactly 2 weeks ago today, we hosted migrant workers from Haiti for a BBQ in our garden and provided food for them to take back to their camp. Our guests live and work in Hammonton (the blueberry capital of the world), New Jersey to pick blueberries just for the harvesting season until they move North to harvest apples in a new location. It was an honor to be their host and enjoy their company over freshly grilled zucchini & okra from our garden. Although the language barrier made it difficult to understand one another, we were able to communicate by being quite expressive, acting out what we were trying to say. In fact, one Haitian woman identified a plant in our garden that we did not recognize and informed us that it was good for digestion by rubbing her belly and motioning her arms as if she was drinking.

All in all it was a privilege to host these loving people and to share our garden with those who serve our community behind the scenes each summer. We appreciate them and all they do!

Today we planted lots of goodies to be harvested in autumn including pumpkins, butternut squash, watermelon, cabbage, basil, and arugula! Keep a look out during the start of the semester for events, give-aways, and food tastings fresh from our garden.

Pictured here, we have Dave seeding cabbage as well as all of the food we harvested yesterday (zucchini, cucumbers, okra, purple basil, kale, tatsoi, beets, beans, onions) to be donated to the local Community FoodBank.

Whatta week!
