FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: May 26, 2026
Incident Type: Structure Fire
Incident Date/Time: Saturday, May 23, 2026, at approximately 23:38 hours
Location: 700 block of East Cooper Ferry Court (Smithville)

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ — On Saturday, May 23, 2026, at approximately 2338 hours, the Oceanville Volunteer Fire Company and Bayview Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to the 700 block of East Cooper Ferry Court following reports of smoke inside a residence.

Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke showing from the structure, and a working fire was immediately declared. As arriving firefighters initiated interior fire attack operations, officers from the Galloway Township Police Department quickly coordinated and executed the evacuation of residents from adjoining apartments.

Due to the rapid intervention of first responders, the fire was successfully contained. There were no injuries reported to members of the public or responding personnel. Regrettably, one household pet was located deceased inside an affected unit.

The Galloway Township Fire Department extends its sincere gratitude to our mutual aid partners for their swift response and critical support on scene:

Port Republic Volunteer Fire Company
Absecon Fire Department
Galloway Township Ambulance Squad
South Egg Harbor
AtlantiCare Paramedics

The cause and origin of the fire remain under active joint investigation by the Galloway Township Police Department and the Galloway Township Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit.

🚒 TRAINED & READY 🚒

On Monday, the volunteers at Oceanville Fire Company participated in intensive live fire training.

While we hope we never have to face a major fire in our community, we train for the worst-case scenarios so we are always at our best. These controlled, real-life drills allow our crew to sharpen their skills, test equipment, and practice life-saving rescue techniques under extreme conditions.

True emergency preparedness isn’t a one-time thing—it’s a continuous commitment.
A huge thank you to our dedicated members who stepped into the heat to ensure that when our community calls, we are ready to respond.

Stay safe out there, neighbors! We've got your back. 🔥💪

‼️Close the Doors Behind You🚪
Check out this PSA from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Damage to rooms can be limited when doors are closed when a house fire starts. Closing the doors inside your home can mean the difference between total loss and just cleaning up.

Also important make sure doors to the outside (Front door, garage doors etc.) are also shut if a fire breaks out in your home as you exit.

🔥 IMPORTANT: Don't Let Your Trash Become a Flash! 🔥
At Oceanville Volunteer Fire Company, we love a good bonfire—but only when we’re the ones who started it (and have the marshmallows ready)! 🪵🔥

Lately, we’ve seen a "spark" in a dangerous trend: Lithium-Ion Batteries being tossed into regular household trash and recycling bins. While they power our favorite gadgets, they don’t play well with garbage trucks or processing centers. Ensure you are deposing them appropriately.

When these batteries get crushed by a garbage truck’s compactor or sorted by heavy machinery, they can enter Thermal Runaway. Translation? They turn into a high-heat blowtorch in seconds.

🗑️Garbage Trucks: A fire in the back of a truck is a nightmare for drivers and our crew.

♻️Recycling Centers: One small battery can ignite a mountain of paper and plastic.

😷Safety First: These fires are incredibly difficult to put out and release toxic fumes.

If it’s rechargeable, it CANNOT go in your curbside bin🚮:

📱 Old Cell Phones & Tablets

💻 Laptops

🔋 Power Tool Batteries

🚲 E-Bike/Scooter Batteries

💨 Vapes/E-Cigarettes

✅ How to Be a Local Hero

Tape the Terminals: Put a piece of clear tape over the metal "ends" of the battery.

🛍️Bag It: Place individual batteries in separate plastic bags.

🏬Drop It Off: Take them to a designated drop-off site (like a big-box hardware store or a local hazardous waste event).

➜Pro-Tip: Check Call2Recycle.org to find the closest drop-off spot to Galloway! You can also call Township of Galloway Office of Sustainability at (609) 652-3700 ext. 209. Galloway also offers a recycling center for these items on the first Saturday of the month from 8a - 2p.
