The Gallia County Health Department recently had the opportunity to attend and present at the World TB Day conference focused on tuberculosis awareness, prevention, screening, and treatment.

Tuberculosis remains an important public health concern, and ongoing education is essential to ensuring our staff stay informed on current best practices, updated guidance, and effective strategies for prevention and response. Opportunities like this allow us to strengthen our knowledge, collaborate with other public health professionals, and bring valuable information back to our local community.

We were grateful for the opportunity to present, learn, and participate in professional development that supports our mission to protect and improve the health of Gallia County residents. Through continued education and community awareness, we remain committed to supporting early identification, appropriate treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis.

As we enjoy the summer season, itโ€™s important to keep safety in mind. Emergencies can happen quickly, and it is common for people to freeze in the moment. Learning a few basic first aid and water safety skills ahead of time can help you feel more prepared and confident if something unexpected happens.

Drowning prevention is especially important during the summer months. Children should always be closely supervised around water, even if they have had swimming lessons. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, and residential pools, lakes, rivers, and other natural waters all come with risks.

A few important reminders:

โ€ข Supervise children closely and constantly around water.
โ€ข Use life jackets when boating or around natural water.
โ€ข Do not rely on floaties or air-filled toys as safety devices.
โ€ข Avoid alcohol while swimming, boating, or supervising children near water.
โ€ข Swim with a buddy whenever possible.
โ€ข Be aware of weather, currents, visibility, and other hazards in natural waters.
โ€ข Consider extra precautions for medical conditions or medications that may affect balance, coordination, or alertness.
โ€ข Learn CPR. These skills can save a life while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

First aid and CPR videos are a great way to review the basics, but they are not a replacement for hands-on training. If possible, consider taking a first aid, CPR, swimming, or water safety course.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping everyone have a safer summer.
