The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning the public about a scam involving individuals falsely claiming to be deputies with our office. These scammers are contacting people by telephone and demanding payment for alleged outstanding warrants, fines, or other court-related matters.

Please remember:

* The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you by telephone to demand payment for warrants or fines.
* Legitimate criminal justice agencies do not solicit payments over the phone.
* Never provide personal, banking, credit card, or other payment information to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly by telephone.

If you receive one of these calls, do not engage with the caller. Hang up immediately. If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office directly using our official phone number (740) 446-1221.

UPDATE 9-4-2026 11:00 am:

The phone line issue is a wide spread issue. They have narrowed it down to Franklin County and now trying to come up with a solution. Currently our 911 lines are still transferred to Lawrence County and admin lines are working sporadically. Will update when we learn more. We still have the 2 cell phones in the office if you cannot get through on the other lines. 740-339-3057 and 740-339-0976

Currently we are experiencing phone line issues on both 911 and administration lines. All 911 lines have been transferred to Lawrence County 911 and they can get ahold of us via cell phones. If you have a non emergency call for the Sheriff Office, Gallipolis Police or Rio Grande Police Dept. you can dial 740-339-0976 or 740-339-3057 we will update the public as we receive information from AT&T on what the issue is.

🚍 School Bus Safety Reminder 🛑

We have already issued one citation for a school bus passing violation this school year.

Motorists are reminded that traffic in both directions must stop on Eastern Avenue and Upper River Road when a school bus is stopped and actively loading or unloading children.

Please be aware that the center left-turn lane does not constitute a divided highway and does not exempt motorists from the requirement to stop for a school bus.

During the last school year, we documented a total of 30 school bus passing violations within the city limits. Each violation places children at unnecessary risk.

We ask everyone to remain alert, obey the law, and exercise extra caution around school buses. A few seconds of patience can help protect a child’s life.

Thank you for helping us keep our community’s children safe.

Law enforcement officers said this isn't a new problem.
