🟣 June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month 🟣

June is recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) observed annually on June 15. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse—as well as neglect—that vulnerable older adults may face, while promoting prevention, protection, and community safety.

⚠️ Know the Warning Signs

Elder abuse often occurs in silence. Be aware of these common indicators:

🔹 Physical Abuse: Unexplained bruises, cuts, burns, or frequent injuries.
🔹 Emotional Abuse: Sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal, fear, anxiety, or depression.
🔹 Financial Exploitation: Unexplained withdrawals, missing funds, or sudden changes to wills or powers of attorney.
🔹 Neglect: Poor hygiene, untreated medical conditions, weight loss, or unsafe and unclean living environments.

Did you know that the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office conducts all Adult Protective Services investigations in Gallia County through a collaborative funding partnership with the Department of Job and Family Services?

This partnership provides for two detectives to work hand-in-hand with JFS staff to investigate crimes related to both child abuse and elder abuse—two of our community’s most vulnerable populations.

👮‍♂️ We are proud of the detectives assigned to this important work. Their efforts go beyond investigating crimes; they also help connect victims with essential social services to support their health, safety, and overall well-being.

If you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, please report it. Together, we can help protect and support the older adults in our community.
