Galion Public Library Enriching the lives of the citizens of the Galion area with a wide variety of materials and services. Galion Public Library was founded in 1901.

Since that time our collection has grown to around 100,000 items. Initially the library was housed in a small log cabin, which is now located in Heise Park. The current library building (pictured at left) was built in 1904, partly with Carnegie funds, and later expanded in 1991 to create room for an ever-growing collection of materials and services. Besides a dedicated professional staff, the Galion Public Library is also blessed with an active Friends of the Library group. The friends hold seasonal bake sales and bazaars, as well as managing the library's running book sale. The funds raised by the Friends are used to better the services provided by the library. The library is governed by an independent board.

Tonight at 5:30 pm we will be having our Community Chess Club.
Ages 7-125 years old, this multi-generational program is a great place to learn & have fun! Not sure how to play? There will be a teaching table for anyone who is interested in learning how to play chess. Always feel free to bring your own boards along with you, if not we've got you covered. Come meet some new friends and learn some new moves.

It's !!! We want to take some time throughout this week to talk about our wonderful Friends of the Galion Public Library, Inc. who do so much more for us than you could possibly imagine.

This organization is comprised of independent volunteers, who choose to dedicate their time to organize and come together in support of their local library, and the work they do for us is invaluable. The gratitude we feel towards our Friends is immeasurable, and we thank them for the opportunities they afford us through their charitable work.

Friends of libraries have been around since the Elizabethan Period, with the first recorded Friends group being established in France in 1913. This group was called "La Société de Amis de la Bibliothèque Nationale des Grandes Bibliotèques de France," translating to "The Society of Friends of the National Library and the Major Libraries of France." Thankfully, it seems that Friends groups shortened their titles with time. The first group to name itself "Friends of the Library" was founded in 1922 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

As of current, the Friends of the Galion Public Library has 111 members and is always open to new people joining the group. These members work to organize and execute at least two book sales yearly at our library, put together basket raffles, host fundraisers, set up at community events like farmers markets and festivals, and so, SO much more to raise money that goes directly to supporting our library. When they aren't fundraising, they provide volunteer work for our bigger programs like our Holiday Open House, spread the word on what's happening at our library, and generally get up to being incredible people in our community. Our library would not be the same without their support, and the time and care they dedicate to their work.

Tomorrow, we'll take a closer look at what their work really looks like in action and discuss a few things that the Friends have made possible at our library this year!

STEAM AHEAD RECAP!
This October our scientists explored two different fall themes.
